Greetings!

My name is Sydney. I have a degree in Linguistics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, with a focus in translating and interpreting. I work full-time as a computational linguist/conversational engineer, building out language models for AI. Tutoring has been a side-gig for me since 2012, through which I've discovered a love for working with students one-on-one.

A bit about me academically--I graduated with honors in the Spring of 2017, summa cum laude, student marshal for my department. I wrote an 80-page honors thesis with original research and experimentation concerning linguistic relativity and Russian verbs of motion. This research was conducted through a grant-funded trip to Russia, and my resulting presentation won the first place prize for Arts and Humanities. I received the Wiswell scholarship multiple times for excellence in Russian studies, and am fluent in Danish, Norwegian, and French. Intermediate Russian. Though I have experience in a wide variety of subjects, teaching languages is my favorite--for obvious reasons! Followed closely by early algebra, writing, and piano.
I also started my academic journey as a neuroscience major, so I've done a fair amount of study in neuroscience and its related fields. My eclectic work background also includes archery coaching, ballroom dance, West Coast Swing, and Argentine tango.

I've always been a curious soul with a passion for the pursuit of knowledge. Helping others succeed in this endeavor is such a pleasure that it hardly feels like a job. I fully believe in fostering a love of learning itself (not just the material!) and catering to individual student needs; there's little more frustrating than having something explained to you repeatedly using the same blanket format. We'll work together to pinpoint exactly where the misunderstandings are, and find a way through it in a way that is memorable. In addition to teaching the material itself, I teach how to learn effectively, and how to enjoy the process!

Amazing Teacher

Our daughter was heading into French 2 for her sophomore year of High School. She had struggled a bit in French 1, not quite grasping some of the core concepts. We found Sydney online and she has been AMAZING! Our daughter has gotten up to speed after only 3-4 sessions and was even open to adding a few more before we leave Hawaii (we are here for the summer from the mainland). Sydney teaches and uses fun concepts to help the student, as well. We highly recommend Sydney to anyone on the island who is looking for a tutor! Much Mahalo, Sydney!

Sydney is a very knowledgeable and patient language tutor!

I am learning Norwegian with Sydney and I couldn't ask for a better tutor. As I am an adult trying to pick up the language, I feel she does an exceptional job to fit the material to my particular learning rate. She is very professional and patient, which really encourages me to learn even more! Thanks, Sydney!

Making learning interesting

My son is going to Norway for his junior year of high school, so we wanted to find a tutor for him to get a head start on becoming fluent in Norwegian. What he likes about her is that she makes learning fun and entertaining. She gives him homework so that he keeps his studies going in between lessons. Her teaching style has made my son learn another language a lot more interesting than it otherwise would've been. Thank you, Sydney! Destine & Landon

Great tutor

Sydney really connected with my 14 year old daughter. This was the most engaged I have seen my daughter in a long time doing math. When she got done she said she enjoyed it and that she wanted to do it again. It was a like a light bulb went on in her brain which was great to see. Satisfied customer!! The things we enjoyed the most about Sydney were 1. Despite her young age she was able to command our daughter's respect and she was reliable. 2. She provided very detailed summaries of her lessons that kept us updated on what they were working on. 3. Most of all she made my daughter really believe that she can do this math and that she can be successful in this. We had Sydney for almost five months and she moved my daughter from an "F" to almost a "C" which is incredible in that short amount of time. She built a good foundation that will make things easier for our next tutor.
