Throughout my educational and professional experiences, I prepared lesson plans for individuals, small groups, and whole classes, striving to cater to students’ diverse developmental needs. Working with students with IEPs and English Language Learners involved interacting with students whose needs and backgrounds differed dramatically. Modifying and adapting instruction for these students proved essential to their improvement and success. College courses in Early Childhood Education and Family Studies, provided me with pedagogical perspectives, developmental knowledge, and helpful accommodation ideas necessary to connect with students and discover ways to help them learn.
Mathematics always came easily to me, and so, it was a subject which I frequently helped others. When tutoring students in mathematics, I find ways to make problems less abstract and easier to remember. With young children, this may mean singing songs, doing art, or using manipulatives to help teach concepts. In more complex mathematics, finding real-life applications can helpful.
I have been helping teach English Language Learners for over eight years. Classes in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, which I took in college, provide me with the skills and knowledge to help individuals learn English. A basic understanding of Spanish and frequent immersion in the Hispanic/Latino culture help me better grasp the challenges which individuals may face and connect with the individuals I help.
