My goal as a young student was to become a teacher. As fate would have it, I became an early-adopter for using computers in the graphic arts and printing industry, and ended up teaching in the industry rather than in the classroom. From 1997 to 2007 I worked for a software development company, traveling extensively teaching automation techniques and programming for the newspaper industry. From there I have worked on specific projects such as catalog and book production. As the information age shifted from print to web and mobile devices, I added cross-publishing and User Experience (UX) with emphasis on ePub.

I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web.

As I look back at over 30 years of experience I know my greatest sense of accomplishment is in helping students hone their skills and go on to fulfill their dreams. My greatest challenge is in staying at the forefront of a technology that is changing almost daily. I appreciate being honored as an Adobe Community Professional (ACP). As such I keep up to date on their software and completed their "Train the Trainer" course in 2018.

Believing in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, I find instructing through Wyzant to be a unique opportunity, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions.

Adobe Illustrator,

As a commercial artist, I pioneered computer technology as an art medium. For over seven yeas, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies. I have been recognized as a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges. As an Adobe Community Professional (ACP) I keep up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software.
Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I have consulted and taught InDesign since its first release. As an Adobe Community Professional I keep up on all of the latest changes and improvements. My specialty is automating InDesign using AppleScript and ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). Current focus is with multi-platform publications including Publish to Web, ePub, and animation.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I embraced Photoshop since its first release in 1990. For over seven years, I consulted with major advertising agencies, schools, and publishing companies on best practices. Before computers, I studied photograph retouching (hand and, later, airbrush), as such retouching has been my specialty. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Computer

Adobe Flash,

Adobe Flash

As a long-time Flash user (since 2007), I was excited to see the release of Adobe Animate CC 2016 (formerly Flash). The HTML/Canvas side of this version is a vast improvement over Edge Animate (which it now replaces). For the past year, I have been developing curriculum for teaching the application with emphasis on coding (HTML/Canvas and Action Script 3). Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Very knowlegable about the subject.

She is teaching me basically from ground zero on how to use Adobe Photoshop. She was very good and I look forward to learn more from her. Afterward our meeting she even sent me a paper on what we learned in our first lesson.

Photoshop grid building and work area layout

Good solid background with the patience to teach Specifically Shirley gave me an easy quality work around for building a photo grid for a Christmas Card. Also worked on a new saved work area layout.

Experienced and very knowledgeable

I learned basic techniques and a few complex ones. Shirley has a nice teaching style. I highly recommend her to other students. InDesign is more complicated than it should be, so its an app that screams for a tutor.

Knowledgeable and responsive

Shirley helped me with a book project bringing text from Word into InDesign. She is thoroughly experienced and versed in this, and was responsive to all my questions. She had prepared lesson pages for me, which were very helpful.
