My focus is with publishing to print, web, and electronic devices.
I am a specialist in using scripting languages to automate applications in the Adobe Creative Suite.
As an Adobe Community Professional I keep abreast of the latest in technology and enjoy helping others push their skills to the next level. I believe in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions via email.
I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web. Although primarily a Macintosh user, I also support Windows.

Shirley is an amazing tutor. I started looking for a tutor for my web development class. I couldn't have found a better tutor. Her lessons are well planned out and she always has exercises that go well with the topic you are learning. She helps even you when you're struggling and is always available to email, she responds very promptly. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Shirley had a lesson in angular 2 all planned out with a step by step example of how everything comes together. She's very patient and answers all my questions. Glad I found her.
My first session with Shirley was spent going over some basics of programming. She then offered some suggestions about how to memorize the materials. It was a great session and I look forward to meeting with her as the need arises in the future. I feel anyone who is trying to learn programming would definitely benefit by having Shirley tutor them.
Shirley always prepares the teaching according to the textbook of my son. I appreciate her help very much. She is very knowledgeable.
I appreciate that she can come to my location of work and complies with my evening availability. She is tutoring me in Indesign and helped me with programs and short cuts. She has taken the time to outline and send me a link of all the info we went over, which when I opened, was amazed of how much we discussed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a long-time Flash user (since 2007), I was excited to see the release of Adobe Animate CC 2017 (formerly Flash). The HTML/Canvas side of this version is a vast improvement over Edge Animate (which it now replaces). For the past year, I have been developing curriculum for teaching the application with emphasis on the HTML/Canvas side of the application.
I have been working with Illustrator since its first release. As an Adobe Community Professional I am privileged to receive white papers and technical instruction to keep me up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software. As the technical partner for two service bureaus, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies (7 years). I have been recognized to be a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges.
I have worked with Photoshop since its first release. As a partner with two service bureaus in the early days of the desktop publishing era, I consulted with major advertising agencies and publishing companies on best practices. As an automation engineer for Digital Publishing International (10 years) I was the "go-to" person for questions concerning Photoshop. I am currently regarded as a Community Professional for Adobe and use Photoshop as my principal graphics front end for creating web pages and web apps.
I grew up in the printing industry gaining a love for typography at an early age. I studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Salt Lake Community College. I had my own design and typesetting service (Graphics Cold Type) for six years. As a production manager for newspaper and commercial printing I have hired and trained employees on production techniques. As technical lead for start-up computer graphics services (7 years) I consulted and trained employees at sign companies, major publishing houses, and advertising agencies in programs including Ventura, Corel Draw, QuarkXPress, Freehand, Illustrator, and Photoshop. As a production automation engineer (10 years) I became expert with Adobe InDesign and InCopy for newspaper production. With the growth of the electronic publishing industry, I switched my focus in 2008 to using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop for publishing to web and electronic devices and continue to support the industry in that capacity.
I have worked with Macintosh since the "beginning." In fact, the company I worked for in 1983 (Digital Technology) was a Macintosh developer. I went on to work as the technology lead for two service bureaus, helping major companies and schools embrace the new "desktop publishing" technology. My experience with Macintosh goes a little deeper than just working with the user interface, as I supported FaceSpan (a user interface programming tool for seven years), and am recognized for my knowledge of AppleScript (the native scripting language for the Macintosh). I am the author of AppleScripting QuarkXPress and AppleScripting Adobe InDesign.
I have more than ten years working experience creating web pages starting with HTML, and for the several years with HTML 5 and CSS3. While working as an automation engineer/corporate trainer for Digital Technology International (1997 to 2007), I developed curriculum and resource materials using HTML.
I have experience with Dreamweaver CS6, WordPress, KF8 (Amazon's HTML5 language for Kindle Fire), and Adobe InDesign's HTML export. I use Business Catalyst for sites that require server-side functionality. As a Community Professional for Adobe Systems, I keep on top of the latest advances in technology focusing primarily on publishing for web and hand-held devices.
I recently authored a children's book for Amazon Kindle using KF8 format and provide online support for authors interested in creating ePub and children's books for Kindle.
My website includes a blog about automating InDesign; and I also try to keep up with a WordPress blog.
