About Shirley

I am an Adobe Community Professional with over 30 years experience in computer graphics and programming, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, Edge Reflow), Pages, iBooksAuthor, AppleScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, and Xcode (Objective C).
My focus is with publishing to print, web, and electronic devices.
I am a specialist in using scripting languages to automate applications in the Adobe Creative Suite.

As an Adobe Community Professional I keep abreast of the latest in technology and enjoy helping others push their skills to the next level. I believe in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions via email.

From 1997 to 2007 I worked for a software development company, traveling extensively teaching publishing techniques and programming for the newspaper industry (AppleScript, JavaScript, and VisualBasic). As the information age shifted from print to web and mobile devices, I added Flash and Flex with ActionScript 3. Current focus is with HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, JavaScript, Objective C, Edge Animate, Edge Reflow, and Edge Code.

I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web. Although primarily a Macintosh user, I also support Windows.

My interests are art (especially computer generated), photography, health, and nutrition. I also enjoy hiking, tennis, and swimming.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I have been working with Illustrator since its first release. As an Adobe Community Professional I am privileged to receive white papers and technical instruction to keep me up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software. As the technical partner for two service bureaus, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies (7 years). I have been recognized to be a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges.

Adobe InDesign

I have worked with InDesign since its first release. I am now working with CS5, CS5.5, CS6, and CC. Recognized by Adobe as a Community Profssional. My specialty is automating InDesign using AppleScript and ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). For ten years I trained and supported newspaper clients with automation solutions which involved InDesign as the front end for Digital Technology's database-centric pagination application (PageSpeed). My current focus is with multi-platform publications including Digital Publishing Suite, ePub, and HTML5. Author "Automating Adobe InDesign CS4 with ExtendScript" and "AppleScripting Adobe CS5 and CS5.5."

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked with Photoshop since its first release. As a partner with two service bureaus in the early days of the desktop publishing era, I consulted with major advertising agencies and publishing companies on best practices. As an automation engineer for Digital Publishing International (10 years) I was the "go-to" person for questions concerning Photoshop. I am currently regarded as a Community Professional for Adobe and use Photoshop as my principal graphics front end for creating web pages and web apps.

As a JavaScript expert, it was natural for me to expand my horizons to include Angular when it was first announced. It wasn't until Angular 1.5, however, that I started teaching the subject. Anticipating the release of Angular2, I began writing tutorials for this version early 2016. Now that this version has been released (mid-September 2016), my focus is with this version as I believe it will emerge as one of the premiere platforms for web and handheld device application development.

Computer Programming

I have been programming computers since the mid-1970's. Languages used include PostScript (to version 2), BASIC, VisualBasic (to version 6.0), AppleScript, ExtendScript, JavaScript, ActionScript 3, iOS (xCode and Swift). Created curriculum and trained classes in VisualBasic, AppleScript, ExtendScript, and SQL (Sybase) for the newspaper industry for ten years. Markup languages include HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, and XML. I also have some experience using XSLT.

Desktop Publishing

I have received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts for Arizona Community College based on industry recommendation. Pioneered Desktop Publishing since "day one." Instructed employees and clients in various positions as Production Manager, Technical Lead, and Automation Engineer. For ten years developed curriculum and taught automation techniques to the newspaper industry. Recognized by Adobe as Community Professional. Enjoy helping students discover their potential in a hands-on environment.

General Computer

I have been working with computers since "day one." My focus, until 2007 was primarily for print production. With consumer demand moving toward web and electronic devices, my focus has concentrated more on converting print documents to web standards (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) as well as creating web pages using Dreamweaver and Business Catalyst. I am currently using Adobe DPS Single Edition, iBooks Author, and XCode5 to publish to iPad and iPhone. For ePub and Kindle .mobi, I add custom CSS to InDesign's export to ePub. For word processing I use Adobe InCopy, MicrosoftWord, and TextEdit. Other applications I use regularly include: Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter.

Graphic Design

I grew up in the printing industry gaining a love for typography at an early age. I studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco (1961-1962) and Salt Lake Community College. I had my own design and typesetting service (Graphics Cold Type) for six years. As a production manager for newspaper and commercial printing I have hired and trained employees on production techniques. As technical lead for start-up computer graphics services (7 years) I consulted and trained employees at sign companies, major publishing houses, and advertising agencies in programs including Ventura, Corel Draw, QuarkXPress, Freehand, Illustrator, and Photoshop. As a production automation engineer (10 years) I became expert with Adobe InDesign and InCopy for newspaper production. With the growth of the electronic publishing industry, I switched my focus in 2008 to using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop for publishing to web and electronic devices and continue to support the industry in that capacity.

I have been working with JavaScript for more than 10 years. I am the author of the book Automating Adobe InDesign CS4 with ExtendScript (ExtendScript is Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). In the capacity of Automation Engineer for Digital Technology International (1997 to 2007) I taught JavaScript, VisualBasic, and AppleScript to our clients in the newspaper industry. For working with HTML5 and CSS3 I also teach JavaScript to produce pages with animation and user interactivity for web and electronic devices (iPad and Kindle specifically).

I have worked with Macintosh since the "beginning." In fact, the company I worked for in 1983 (Digital Technology) was a Macintosh developer. I went on to work as the technology lead for two service bureaus, helping major companies and schools embrace the new "desktop publishing" technology. My experience with Macintosh goes a little deeper than just working with the user interface, as I supported FaceSpan (a user interface programming tool for seven years), and am recognized for my knowledge of AppleScript (the native scripting language for the Macintosh). I am the author of AppleScripting QuarkXPress and AppleScripting Adobe InDesign.

I have been a member of Apple Developers since 1990. I was the sole support for a front-end design application similar to what was then an early version of xCode. When xCode version 5 was released I went back into the program and started working on applications for iPhone and iPad. When Swift was released I went through a number of online classes, including Apple's documentation to bring myself up to speed with Swift. I am now putting together my own lessons to teach the subject.

Web Design

I have more than ten years working experience creating web pages starting with HTML, and for the several years with HTML 5 and CSS3. While working as an automation engineer/corporate trainer for Digital Technology International (1997 to 2007), I developed curriculum and resource materials using HTML.

I have experience with Dreamweaver CS6, WordPress, KF8 (Amazon's HTML5 language for Kindle Fire), and Adobe InDesign's HTML export. I use Business Catalyst for sites that require server-side functionality. As a Community Professional for Adobe Systems, I keep on top of the latest advances in technology focusing primarily on publishing for web and hand-held devices.

I recently authored a children's book for Amazon Kindle using KF8 format and provide online support for authors interested in creating ePub and children's books for Kindle.

My website includes a blog about automating InDesign; and I also try to keep up with a WordPress blog.
