My goal as a young student was to become a teacher. As fate would have it, I became an early-adopter for using computers in the graphic arts and printing industry, and ended up teaching in the industry rather than in the classroom. From 1997 to 2007 I worked for a software development company, traveling extensively teaching automation techniques and programming for the newspaper industry. From there I have worked on specific projects such as catalog and book production. As the information age shifted from print to web and mobile devices, I added cross-publishing and User Experience (UX) with emphasis on ePub.

I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web.

As I look back at over 30 years of experience I know my greatest sense of accomplishment is in helping students hone their skills and go on to fulfill their dreams. My greatest challenge is in staying at the forefront of a technology that is changing almost daily. I appreciate being honored as an Adobe Community Professional (ACP). As such I keep up to date on their software and completed their "Train the Trainer" course in 2018.

Believing in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, I find instructing through Wyzant to be a unique opportunity, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions.

Applications: Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate), iBooksAuthor.
Coding languages: AppleScript, JavaScript, ActionScript 3, XML,, HTML5, CSS3, AppsScript.
Interests: Art (especially computer-generated), photography, hiking, health and nutrition.

Art

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

As a commercial artist, I pioneered computer technology as an art medium. For over seven yeas, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies. I have been recognized as a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges. As an Adobe Community Professional (ACP) I keep up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software.
Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I have consulted and taught InDesign since its first release. As an Adobe Community Professional I keep up on all of the latest changes and improvements. My specialty is automating InDesign using AppleScript and ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). Current focus is with multi-platform publications including Publish to Web, ePub, and animation.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I embraced Photoshop since its first release in 1990. For over seven years, I consulted with major advertising agencies, schools, and publishing companies on best practices. Before computers, I studied photograph retouching (hand and, later, airbrush), as such retouching has been my specialty. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Computer

Adobe Flash,

Adobe Flash

As a long-time Flash user (since 2007), I was excited to see the release of Adobe Animate CC 2016 (formerly Flash). The HTML/Canvas side of this version is a vast improvement over Edge Animate (which it now replaces). For the past year, I have been developing curriculum for teaching the application with emphasis on coding (HTML/Canvas and Action Script 3). Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Animation

Animation

I am already teaching animation under the heading of Flash which is now Adobe Animate. I have worked with Flash since it was first released and now teach both the HTML/JavaScript side of the application as well as Action Script 3.0. Also, teach animated GIFs using Photoshop. I have received teaching badges from Adobe for instructing the adult student and was certified to teach AppleScript and JavaScript for InDesign through Digital Technology International (1997-2007). Have been teaching within the industry since then and most recently (last 7 years) through WyzAnt. Animated PDFs can be produced using InDesign manually but more efficiently with their ExtendScript (JavaScript) engine or AppleScript.

Didn’t want to pull my hair out at the end of the lesson

Shirley has truly been an answer to prayer. Having paid two previous tutors for help with Illustrator, I had given up hope of ever learning what I needed of the program. Shirley was my last attempt and I am beyond thrilled with how our first lesson went. She was patient and incredibly knowledgeable. I was skeptical of how well an online lesson would go but the screen sharing ended up forcing me to learn alongside Shirley as I had to work on things myself with her directions rather than two people trying to sit side by side sharing one screen. She was fabulous at emailing me after our lesson with some tips and other information to help me. I’ve already scheduled multiple follow up lessons and am excited for where this will take me.

Excellent tutor!

Shirley is teaching me Javascript. She is very knowledgeable and very patient with me especially I'm an absolute beginner. She's trying to make me understand this coding language as easy as possible by showing me some visual references so I can understand better, for example variables vs arrays. I really appreciate her way of teaching. You're the best, Shirley!

Loved her! Excellent teacher

I was so stressed out with Photoshop before i signed up. Shirley taught me how to edit my artwork on Photoshop in less than 5 minutes and i tried for a week and still didnt get it. I took notes so i could practice. I really enjoyed talking to her as well. Very positive experience.. She was so patient and if you love to learn from someone who doesnt speed through the instructions and speaks clearly than Shirley is that tutor your looking for.

Adobe illustrator

She is giving lessons to my son and he is learning how to use the tools in illustrator and she would set up projects for him to do that would help him understand the subject

Sonia, 8 lessons with Shirley

Expert and great teacher

She taught me how to Navigate the Effects Controls, how to use different tools, how to edit more efficiently, how to mute on/off audio and control sound, import a still picture, how to navigate Graphics, change out Colors, sizes. I still need more practice with fades and the Opacity tool. She is just what I needed for this class. I had 2 other tutors previously and they did not work out
