My goal as a young student was to become a teacher. As fate would have it, I became an early-adopter for using computers in the graphic arts and printing industry, and ended up teaching in the industry rather than in the classroom. From 1997 to 2007 I worked for a software development company, traveling extensively teaching automation techniques and programming for the newspaper industry. From there I have worked on specific projects such as catalog and book production. As the information age shifted from print to web and mobile devices, I added cross-publishing and User Experience (UX) with emphasis on ePub.

I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web.

As I look back at over 30 years of experience I know my greatest sense of accomplishment is in helping students hone their skills and go on to fulfill their dreams. My greatest challenge is in staying at the forefront of a technology that is changing almost daily. I appreciate being honored as an Adobe Community Professional (ACP). As such I keep up to date on their software and completed their "Train the Trainer" course in 2018.

Believing in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, I find instructing through Wyzant to be a unique opportunity, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions.

Art

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

As a commercial artist, I pioneered computer technology as an art medium. For over seven yeas, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies. I have been recognized as a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges. As an Adobe Community Professional (ACP) I keep up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software.
Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I have consulted and taught InDesign since its first release. As an Adobe Community Professional I keep up on all of the latest changes and improvements. My specialty is automating InDesign using AppleScript and ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). Current focus is with multi-platform publications including Publish to Web, ePub, and animation.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I embraced Photoshop since its first release in 1990. For over seven years, I consulted with major advertising agencies, schools, and publishing companies on best practices. Before computers, I studied photograph retouching (hand and, later, airbrush), as such retouching has been my specialty. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Computer

Adobe Flash,

Adobe Flash

As a long-time Flash user (since 2007), I was excited to see the release of Adobe Animate CC 2016 (formerly Flash). The HTML/Canvas side of this version is a vast improvement over Edge Animate (which it now replaces). For the past year, I have been developing curriculum for teaching the application with emphasis on coding (HTML/Canvas and Action Script 3). Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Animation

Animation

I am already teaching animation under the heading of Flash which is now Adobe Animate. I have worked with Flash since it was first released and now teach both the HTML/JavaScript side of the application as well as Action Script 3.0. Also, teach animated GIFs using Photoshop. I have received teaching badges from Adobe for instructing the adult student and was certified to teach AppleScript and JavaScript for InDesign through Digital Technology International (1997-2007). Have been teaching within the industry since then and most recently (last 7 years) through WyzAnt. Animated PDFs can be produced using InDesign manually but more efficiently with their ExtendScript (JavaScript) engine or AppleScript.

So helpful and knowledgeable

Shirley has been a great help to me in navigating and learning Adobe Illustrator. I am new to AI and she has helped me solve several problems that I couldn't resolve myself and helped me meet my deadlines. She has given me exercises to work on to improve my skills in Illustrator as well. Plus she is as patient and sweet as they come. Highly recommend her!

Shirley helped me complete an assignment using Illustrator. She is very knowledgeable and patient. She walked me through the tool explaining each step along the way. Sharing tips and answering my questions. She is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend her. My only regret is not finding her sooner.

Most patient teacher in the world

Shirley is so patient. She taught me Adobe Illustrator and is now teaching me InDesign. She's very thorough and explains things thoroughly. She even follows up the lesson by sending worksheets that reiterates what she taught in class. She is very knowledgeable and quite possibly the most patient person in the world

Experienced, knowledgable and accommodating professional for Authors using InDesign.

Set the record straight helping me to properly execute formatting edits with ease. My first time formatting my 455 page novel led to resulting in 408 pages with over text issues that Shirley gave me insights to resolve this. She is helpful in explanation of how to page number, tips & tricks on style panels and clarifying the requirements for preparing document for publishing.
