About Shirley

My goal as a young student was to become a teacher. An early-learner, throughout the years, I was more of a teacher's aide, rather than a student. As a member of Future Teachers of America, I student-taught the 3rd grade. I went on to the University of Utah with an Honors at Entrance scholarship dreaming of the day when the computer would make it possible for teachers to provide a more one-on-one learning experience for the student.

As fate would have it, I became an early-adopter for using computers in the graphic arts and printing industry, and ended up teaching in the industry rather than in the classroom. From 1997 to 2007 I worked for a software development company, traveling extensively teaching automation techniques and programming for the newspaper industry. As the information age shifted from print to web and mobile devices, I shifted my focus to cross-publishing and the User Experience (UX).

I have been invited to speak at seminars, participate as a leader in user work groups, and conduct side-sessions for user conferences. I have written articles for magazines, published books on the subject of using scripts to automate applications, and often contribute to user groups on the web.

As I look back at over 30 years of experience I know my greatest sense of accomplishment is in helping students hone their skills and go on to fulfill their dreams. My greatest challenge is in staying at the forefront of a technology that is changing almost daily. In this, I appreciate being honored as an Adobe Community Professional (ACP). As I believe in an immersive, hands-on experience for the learner, I find instructing through Wyzant to be a unique opportunity, and have an open-door policy when it comes to answering student's questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

As a long-time Flash user (since 2007), I was excited to see the release of Adobe Animate CC 2016 (formerly Flash). The HTML/Canvas side of this version is a vast improvement over Edge Animate (which it now replaces). For the past year, I have been developing curriculum for teaching the application with emphasis on coding (HTML/Canvas and Action Script 3). Adobe Community Expert (ACP).

Adobe Illustrator

As a commercial artist, I pioneered computer technology as an art medium. For over seven yeas, I provided instruction in Illustrator and Photoshop for some of Salt Lake's leading advertising agencies, schools, and printing companies. I have been recognized as a leader in the graphic arts community and received a Special Teaching Certificate for Graphic Arts from Arizona Community Colleges. As an Adobe Community Professional (ACP) I keep up to date on the latest improvements and changes to their software.

Adobe InDesign

I have worked with InDesign since its first release. I am now supporting versions from CS6 to CC 2017. Recognized by Adobe as a Community Professional (ACP). My specialty is automating InDesign using AppleScript and ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). Current focus is with multi-platform publications including Publish to Web, ePub, and animation. Author: "Automating Adobe InDesign CS4 with ExtendScript" and "AppleScripting Adobe InDesign CS5 and CS5.5."

Adobe Photoshop

I embraced Photoshop since its first release in 1990. For over seven years, I consulted with major advertising agencies, schools, and publishing companies on best practices. Before computers, I studied photograph retouching (hand and, later, airbrush), as such retouching has been my specialty. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Graphic Design

I grew up in the printing industry gaining a love for typography and graphic arts at an early age. I studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Salt Lake Community College. I had my own design and typesetting service (Graphics Cold Type) for six years. With the advent of the personal computer, I consulted and trained employees at advertising agencies, major publishing houses, and schools. After supporting the newspaper industry for over twenty years, I switched my focus to publishing to web and electronic devices in 2008. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

I am author of a book on automating Adobe InDesign CS4 with ExtendScript (Adobe's extended version of JavaScript). Besides automating Adobe InDesign, current focus is in teaching JavaScript for user interactivity and animation in pages for web and electronic devices.

I started with a Macintosh program developer in 1983. Supported FaceSpan (a Macintosh user interface programming tool for seven years), and am recognized for my knowledge of AppleScript (the native scripting language for the Macintosh). Taught automation on Macintosh for over 10 years andI am the author of AppleScripting QuarkXPress and AppleScripting Adobe InDesign.

Web Design

Preferring to create websites using HTML5, jQuery, CSS, and JavaScript, I have taught Web Design creation using hand-coding, Adobe InDesign's HTML export, and, more recently, Adobe Animate CC 2017. I use Business Catalyst for sites that require server-side functionality. Adobe Community Professional (ACP).

Great tutor!

Shirley is an amazing tutor. I started looking for a tutor for my web development class. I couldn't have found a better tutor. Her lessons are well planned out and she always has exercises that go well with the topic you are learning. She helps even you when you're struggling and is always available to email, she responds very promptly. I highly recommend her to anyone.
