About Spencer

I love to see students during their learning process. I get a thrill every time a student has an "Ahah" moment, and the concept clicks for them.

As far as my teaching experience goes, I have been a tutor since high school when my mom would invite the neighbor kids over and have me help them with math. I have always had a thing for math, and actually won the "American Math Contest" in my school in 11th grade, and lettered in math the same year. I use lots of examples when I teach, and try to get my students to do a lot of the work hands on, so it sticks better. This applies in every subject.

I lived in France for two years on a religious mission for my church, and spent 2 years immersed in the French language while teaching people about God. I also held special language classes for those who just wanted to learn English.

My real passion is in art and animation. I started fiddling around with flip books and stop-motion animation around 2003 when I got hooked on special effects done by Ray Harryhausen. A couple of years later my uncle gave me a 3D program he had bought at a technology convention. He was going to school at the time, and didn't have time to learn how to use it. Soon after that, I was introduced to Blender3D, an open source animation program, and I ate up every tutorial or book I could find on the subject. I graduated from Animation Mentor with a certificate in "Advanced Character Animation." I am confident in Maya, but animation principles are universal so it doesn't really matter what software you use.

I hope that gives you a feel for my personality and strengths. If you would like to meet with me, please send me a message telling me about your current skill level/experience in your subject, and what your main goals are. When we have lessons, I would appreciate it if you could send me some questions in advance so I can prepare a thought out response to help you learn as efficiently as possible.

Let's have a blast!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Animation

I have a 2 year certificate in advanced character animation from Animation Mentor, and was consistently at the top of my class in school. Throughout school I was a volunteer "peer buddy/tutor" for students in lower level classes. I worked for 6 months at an audiovisual studio as an animator/artist working on games and interactive displays for visitor's centers. I work in hand drawn, 2d animation as well as digital/3d computer animation. I have used Autodesk Maya, Blender 3D, Adobe Flash and Photoshop in a professional setting.

Autodesk Maya

I have been using 3D applications for the past 10 years doing 3D modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation. I mainly use Maya and Blender3D. Blender is a very powerful open source (Free) program similar to Maya. I have experience coaching others in classes and on projects. I have a certificate in "Advanced Character Animation" from Animation Mentor. I am passionate about animation, and have taken several classes, and completed hundreds of online tutorials on the subject. I have also done 3D work as a freelance artist since 2012, and have worked on a few indie level films and games.

Bible Studies

I graduated from a 4 year LDS seminary, two years of which were focused on the Bible.
I served a full time mission for two years teaching people how to come closer to God by studying and following the scriptures.
I study the scriptures on a regular basis, and am familiar with them.

Drawing

I am a freelance artist and I design logos and t-shirts as a side job and for fun. I have been drawing my entire life, and have taken several art courses throughout school including figure drawing and drawing for animation. I am always drawing, everywhere I go. I believe the saying that we each have 10,000 bad drawings in us before we get a masterpiece, and I love to see people improve and come closer to that masterpiece. Anyone can draw, it just takes practice and patience.

Elementary Math

I have worked for the school district as an 8th grade math tutor for the "Gear Up" program, including Elementary Math. I believe anyone can learn to enjoy math. There is always a right answer, so once you understand how it works, it becomes like a game.

French

I studied French in high school. When I was 19, I moved to Southern France, where I was immersed in the language for 2 years. When I returned, I took a high level French course at BYU and tested out of several classes. I speak, read, and write at a fairly fluent level. I love the language, and I love seeing people succeed at it!

General Computer

Growing up, I was always my mom's go to person for questions about the computer. I took a computer tech class in high school and was completely bored because the course work was so basic. I have been coaching people off and on ever since on general computer skills, mainly to help people who aren't tech-savvy be autonomous in their start-up business endeavors.

Great Tutor In Every Way!! Great results! Well worth the money!!!

I deeply enjoyed my lesson with Spencer. He doesn't just teach 3D programs, he loves & enjoys teaching them. That is something I was looking for, someone who enjoys what they are doing because that is what I think life is about. His teaching helped me understand the complex program in a fun way and has made it simple for me. He has gotten me to a point where I have the freedom to do what I want wi
