Bio

My specialty is in art and animation, and even if I didn’t need to work, I’d still be doing this because it’s incredibly rewarding. I first fell in love with animation in 2003 when I started experimenting with flipbooks and stop-motion, inspired by Ray Harryhausen’s iconic special effects. A few years later, my uncle introduced me to a 3D animation program, and I was hooked for life. Without easy access to mentors at the time, I taught myself by reading forums and experimenting endlessly....

A few years later, my uncle introduced me to a 3D animation program, and I was hooked for life. Without easy access to mentors at the time, I taught myself by reading forums and experimenting endlessly. That journey shaped my belief in the value of mentorship and why I aim to provide students with the guidance I wish I’d had.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Animation and Game Development from Utah Valley University and a certificate in Advanced Character Animation from Animation Mentor. Over the years, I’ve worked as a creature animator, character animator, rigger, and 3D artist on feature films, TV series, YouTube cartoons, and web games. My skills include proficiency in Autodesk Maya for modeling, rigging, and animation, as well as experience with the entire production pipeline. Along the way, I’ve learned from industry professionals at DreamWorks and Disney, gaining insights that I now share with my students.

I’ve taught students of all ages in both one-on-one and classroom settings, adapting my methods to fit each student’s unique learning style. My goal is to break down complex concepts into manageable steps, empowering students to build their confidence and skills. I encourage students to share their goals and current skill level so I can tailor lessons specifically to their needs. I also ask them to send me questions ahead of time so I can prepare thorough and thoughtful responses, ensuring our time together is as productive as possible.

I graduated from a 4 year LDS seminary, two years of which were focused on the Bible. I served a full time mission for two years teaching people how to come closer to God by studying and following the scriptures. I study the scriptures on a regular basis, and am familiar with them.

I am a freelance artist and I design logos and t-shirts as a side job and for fun. I have been drawing my entire life, and have taken several art courses throughout school including figure drawing and drawing for animation. I am always drawing, everywhere I go. I believe the saying that we each have 10,000 bad drawings in us before we get a masterpiece, and I love to see people improve and come closer to that masterpiece. Anyone can draw, it just takes practice and patience.

I have worked for the school district as an 8th grade math tutor for the "Gear Up" program, including Elementary Math. I believe anyone can learn to enjoy math. There is always a right answer, so once you understand how it works, it becomes like a game.

French

I studied French in high school. When I was 19, I moved to Southern France, where I was immersed in the language for 2 years. When I returned, I took a high level French course at BYU and tested out of several classes. I speak, read, and write at a fairly fluent level. I love the language, and I love seeing people succeed at it!

General Computer

Growing up, I was always my mom's go to person for questions about the computer. I took a computer tech class in high school and was completely bored because the course work was so basic. I have been coaching people off and on ever since on general computer skills, mainly to help people who aren't tech-savvy be autonomous in their start-up business endeavors.

Great Tutor In Every Way!! Great results! Well worth the money!!!

I deeply enjoyed my lesson with Spencer. He doesn't just teach 3D programs, he loves & enjoys teaching them. That is something I was looking for, someone who enjoys what they are doing because that is what I think life is about. His teaching helped me understand the complex program in a fun way and has made it simple for me. He has gotten me to a point where I have the freedom to do what I want with the program so I can thoroughly love it also! I am thrilled that I found him! I came wanting to get a basic hold on Maya modeling and he has given me that but also made rigging and animation feel possible! Of course there is so much in the Maya program to learn so I will be calling him again when I get to rigging and animation but I feel like I have a good hold on modeling. If I ever get stuck I feel like I have a GREAT tutor to call when I need to understand something so that I can move forward! I have no desire to find another tutor. Spencer was great in every way! I can't even describe how perfect he was as a tutor for what I was learning! He works with the student at their own pace and if a student likes to jump around with random questions (like I do) he easily follows and answers the questions. I'm sure it would be easier for him if I chose a specific place and just stayed within that because Maya is such a big complex program that its hard for even professionals to remember every little thing a person can do in within it but Spencer seemed to do great with me and if he couldn't remember something exactly (which did not seem to happen often even though I was jumping around all over the place) he would quickly refresh his memory and find the answer for me. Definitely worth the money! Every student is different, but for me he was amazing!! I am so pleased with the results! If you want to love, enjoy and have freedom within a 3D program, I would definitely recommend Spencer!!

Patient and thorough tutor

Our 13yo son is learning Maya from Spencer. Spencer comes thoroughly prepared for the lesson and leaves time for our son to self-direct part of the lesson so he can learn things he’s interested in and ask questions. He ends the lesson with an assignment for the week. They build on the assignments each week and all the tasks are very doable by our son with no frustration. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, Spencer is a born teacher!

This semester, my grandson was struggling with Maya 3D Digital Program and we sought out a tutor to assist him. Spencer was quite knowledgeable, extremely patient , and helped to simplify what is not necessarily a user friendly app. He was able to simplify the program and helped him troubleshoot whenever he encounter roadblocks and provided the necessary guidance needed to improve his project.
