This background has given me extensive experience with critical reading, argumentation, research, and clear, persuasive writing.
I have more than a decade of experience teaching liberal arts in university and prison-education settings. Since 2019, I have taught philosophy and humanities as an adjunct instructor at Salt Lake Community College, including moral philosophy and philosophy of religion for students at the Utah Department of Corrections. I have also taught philosophy and writing at Utah Valley University. My students have included traditional college-age learners and adults with widely different educational backgrounds, confidence levels, and academic goals. In my professional work in instructional design and training and development, I also create curricula and learning experiences for adult employees.
My tutoring is patient, conversational, and tailored to each student. I begin by identifying the assignment, the student’s current understanding, and the specific point of difficulty. I then break complex ideas into manageable steps, use questions and concrete examples to clarify abstract concepts, and provide direct feedback without taking over the student’s work. Whether a student needs help understanding a philosopher, developing a thesis, organizing an essay, strengthening an argument, or revising prose, my goal is to help that student become a more confident and independent thinker and writer.
