Hey there! My name is Ian, and I graduated from McGill University with a degree in Statistics and minors in Arabic and Economics. I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Utah. I have experience with a wide range of subjects, but my strongest areas are Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Probability, and Economics. I also speak English, Spanish, and French fluently and would love to help students learn those languages as well.

During the final year of my undergraduate degree, I tutored Calculus, Statistics, and Linear Algebra through McGill University’s tutoring program. My teaching style is flexible and centered around understanding where a student is starting from. I like to identify the concepts that are giving them trouble and then work through those areas together. For math, I especially enjoy working through practice problems with students. Rather than simply giving an answer, I want students to develop the ability to recognize problems, work through them, and understand why a solution works.

For languages, I focus heavily on conversation, active listening, and building vocabulary in context. I also encourage students to use techniques such as image-based flashcards to build stronger connections with new words.

Ultimately, my goal isn't just to help you get through your next assignment or exam. I want to give you the tools and confidence to become a more independent learner. My favorite part of tutoring is when a student reaches the point where they realize, “Oh, I actually know how to do this.”

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I have taken 3 courses of college calculus as well as applications of calculus in probability theory and stats. Additionally, I tutored calculus on mutliple occasions informally in my undergrad. I focus mainly on conceptual understanding of ideas within calculus, as well as working through word problems or tests questions to develop calculus as a critical thinking tool rather than rote memorization.
French

French

I lived in Quebec for 5 years where I worked professionally in French. I also passed the AP French test and have a seal of Bi-Literacy in French from my high school. I can help in both formal French for academic settings, as well as coloquial Quebecois French.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taken 3 years of college calculus and algebra courses, as well as more advanced courses. Additionally, I have tutored calculus, including precalculus. I passed the AP Calculus test with a 3 in high school as well.
Probability

Probability

I took multiple courses in probability and statistics throuhgout my undergrad, including advanced courses in probability theory in my master's. In addition to this, I am currently doing research in my master's degree using probability theory for ecological applications. Probability is definately the strongest subject of mine, and also my favourite.
Python

Python

I have 3 years of experience with Python in personal projects, school projects, research, and data science internships. I mostly focus on data science applications in Python, but have also created other projects unrelated to data science. I also know many different refactoring techniques in Python so code is not only workable, but flexible.
Spanish

Spanish

I taught myself fluent Spanish over the span of one year using flashcards, active listening, and conversations with native speakers. Needless to say, I know the process of learning a language inside and out and I can help improve your Spanish. My accent is very Mexican, so that is the Spanish I will be focusing on.
Statistics

Statistics

I received a Bachelor's degree in Statistics from a top-50 school and then went on to practice data science in a professional capacity. I have experience tutoring stats from both a test-prep and conceptual view point. I can teach: AP stats, intro stats, mathematical statistics, linear regression, multiple regression, and machine learning.
