Hi, I'm Cathryn! I am graduating from the University of Utah in December with a major in English Literature and a minor in Japanese Language. I maintain a 4.0 GPA and serve as Editor-in-Chief of my university's nationwide literary journal. Recently, I completed an exchange program at Waseda, Japan's top private college. I have a passion for language that I’m eager to share with others. In high school, I admired how my favorite English teacher inspired even the most reluctant students through his genuine love for the subject. Likewise, as a tutor, I aim not only to help my students improve, but also to help them appreciate what they learn.

I have 4+ years of tutoring experience with students in grades 6 through 12. I specialize in English, including reading, writing, vocab, and college essays. I also teach two foreign languages: Spanish and Japanese. I can teach Spanish through AP level, and Japanese through N5 and N4. I am also familiar with the AP English Lang/Comp, AP English Lit/Comp, and AP US History exams. I can additionally assist with the ACT/SAT reading and language sections, on which I received near-perfect scores. My ACT/SAT students typically improve their scores by 15-20% after we work together.

I know everyone has a different optimal learning style. As such, I tailor my lesson plans to each student, adding visual and hands-on components for those who find them useful. For example, I have Spanish students watch short news clips and answer comprehension questions to improve their listening skills and accent. I also teach my students memorization, note-taking, and study techniques so they can continue learning outside our sessions. I will respond to any requests within a few hours, so please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to working with you!
