Hello! I taught high school science for two years in Baltimore, MD and left the classroom to pursue a Ph.D in Neuroscience at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. I am now working at the University of Utah as a post-doctoral researcher in neuroscience. I love teaching, and look at tutoring and individualized instruction as a great way to continue teaching. Through my experience as a tutor, I've found far too many classes teach science as a collection of random facts to be memorized. Not only is that nearly impossible to do, but it also takes away the beauty of science. My goals in science tutoring are to help students understand and internalize the big concepts and overarching themes, so that the individual facts have context (which makes it easier to remember).

I use my training as an educator, experience as a tutor, and knowledge gained from research in the neuroscience of learning and memory (my doctoral and post-doctoral work) to maximize the efficiency of learning the material (knowing that joy, enthusiasm, and interest in a subject are necessary for any learning). The results for my students are a greater interest in the subject, a long-lasting understanding of the material, and (of course) better performance in the class.

While I've had good success coming in at the end of a semester to help students cram for a test in a class they are behind in, I do my best work meeting regularly with students helping them learn - and remember - the material over the long term.

I sincerely hope that I get to help you our your child gain a long-lasting understanding of the world around us through science,
Matt

Approved Subjects

Baseball

Baseball

I grew up in NYC playing baseball on the Bulldogs, and won a city championship with Beacon High School. When I taught in Baltimore, I started the baseball team at our small school, we won the small school league our second year. Baseball is a game of situations, and skills. I love the physical preparation of baseball as well as the mental preparation, and look forward to helping your son or daughter become the best ballplayer s/he can.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I minored in college in biochemistry, and have taken the class again during my Ph.D. program. I use biochemistry every day in my doctorate work, and have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain it in context.
Biology

Biology

I majored in biology in college, and taught an introductory science course that was heavy in biology. I am studying neuroscience now, a subset of biology. It is also one of my most common subjects to tutor. I have had four clients in the last year.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry has always been my favorite subject. After taking AP chemistry in high school, I had to take chemistry again in college because my school didn't accept AP credits. Knowing I wanted to become a teacher, I spent my class time focusing on how chemistry is taught. It is the subject I've most frequently tutored for friends and family that are interested, but can't understand what their teachers are saying.
Geometry

Geometry

I am a spatial thinker, and found geometry intuitive when I first learned it. I understand that I'm in the minority there, and have worked to find ways to explain it to people that don't find it intuitive. I pride myself in being able to get students to conceptually understand geometry, so that its easier to memorize the equations and formulas needed to answer many of the geometry problems.

Patient tutor who makes content relatable and easy to digest

Matthew taught me about the basics of neuroanatomy and how to best understand the core concepts to build scaffoldings that later help me in the big picture ideas

Great Start

We are off to a great start. Excited about getting science going, even more excited about the math and being challenged and given assignments. McAllister was pleased with how it went too. This will be great :)

A Great Teacher

We are forever in debt to Matt for helping my son, Eben, have a great foundation and study ethics as a freshman in college. Thanks to your amazing teaching skills and guidance, my son had a better grade and GPA. Thanks very much. You are amazing!

Amazing Tutor

Matt has been tutoring my son for the last couple of weeks. My son initially was struggling in Science and was overwhelmed with all the new concepts and upcoming tests. Matt was able to sit with my son and not only teach him science concepts but teach him test taking skills. Soon my son developed the confidence to attack the very tough science homework and tests. Matt's skills as a tutor and his nurturing personality have been very valuable to us and most importantly to my son. He finds him very approachable and now can't wait for his weekly session with Matt.
