Hello, I'm Rachel! I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in honors Chemistry (ACS-approved) and Plant Biology with a minor in American Sign Language. While I was obtaining my bachelor's degrees, I worked as an SI Leader, where I made and executed lesson plans designed to help undergraduate students succeed in historically difficult classes. I did this for 3 years and led sessions for American Sign Language 2, General Chemistry 1, and Organic Chemistry. For this, I was awarded Most Creative Session Plans three years in a row, as well as being awarded MVP SI Leader. I have received a master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Utah. Here, I was a TA at the University of Utah for General Chemistry 1 lab, Organic Chemistry 1 lab and lecture, Organic Chemistry 2 lab, Advanced Organic Chemistry lab, and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry Lab. I was also a Mentor TA, in which I supported TAs, and helped them become the best teachers they can be. I have tutored elementary students in reading.
As a high school student, when taking the ACT, I made a 36 on the English portion, a 35 on the Reading portion, and a 36 on the Math portion. I have multiple years of teaching experience as a certified Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) (over 10 years as an assistant instructor, 6 years as a WSI, and 6 years as an LGI). This has allowed me to teach a wide range of students, ranging from toddlers to adults. While these take place at a pool, I have learned that many of the techniques I learned are applicable to the classroom and tutoring setting.
As a tutor/teacher, my favorite part is helping students become excited about the material. I also love to see the lightbulb turn on for students who were struggling with the material.
