Certified and Experienced High School Math Educator Tutor

I have over 20 years of math tutoring experience. I have a bachelor degree from Miami of Ohio University and a master degree in secondary math education from University of Illinois in Chicago. I hold a teaching certificate for secondary mathematics in Illinois. I completed my student teaching experience in Australia, then taught full time for 5 years in high schools in Chicago. I taught algebra, geometry, precalculus, IB math studies, algebra II, trigonometry, and created and taught an integrated math course for seniors with applied math topics, such as statistics and finance. I also organized group review sessions after school and provided ACT prep for my students. I have tutored students in middle school, high school, and community college.

After 5 years, I stepped away from the full-time classroom and continued working as a content creator of assessment problems and continued as a private math tutor. I absolutely love teaching math. Many students have had negative experiences in the past with math and I like to work with them to help overcome these experiences. Each lesson will consist of a mix of direct instruction, practice, and review. I will assess progress during sessions and tailor the amount of practice needed until students are confident and achieve mastery of topics. My goal after a few sessions is to begin moving ahead of what students are currently learning in class. Having some familiarity of a topic ahead of instruction leads to much better long-term understanding and confidence. I provide students with creative ways, like witty rhymes and other mnemonic devices, to remember material for the future. I draw from many resources for problems to work through to keep lessons engaging for all learning styles.
