About Beth Anne

I'm Beth Anne. I was born in Arizona and have lived and travelled all over the United States. I've also visited other countries including Mexico, Guatemala, and Japan.

I have a Master's degree and teaching certificate in TESOL and a Linguistics degree from Brigham Young University.

I've been teaching and tutoring American English for over 10 years.

I began tutoring during my first year at Brigham Young University when a Korean student asked me to help with her Master's thesis. Since then I've taught and tutored hundreds of students from all over the world in universities, one-on-one, and online.

I teach all ages of students, I've taught children as young as 4 years old up to adults nearing 100.
I've taught in person in Japan, at Brigham Young University, and at Utah Valley University. I've tutored online to Hong Kong and Korea, and I've been the manager of an online English teaching company. I love teaching. My students say they enjoy my lessons because they can understand me so well and they like my fun personality.

I offer 4 kinds of lessons, the recommended length for each is 1 hour.
First, I offer conversation lessons to improve your speaking skills. During these lessons either you would choose the subjects you want to talk about, or I would choose topics and adjust them to your level. These lessons would usually include idioms and slang to help you communicate well in a variety of English speaking situations.

Second, I offer pronunciation lessons. During these lessons, we would focus on helping you understand and be understood in American English the first time so that you and others don't have to keep asking each other to repeat yourselves.

Third, I offer grammar lessons. During these lessons, we would focus on correcting the grammar in your spoken English. However, if you had something like a paper or email or something that you wanted help with, then I would work on that with you as well.

And Fourth, I offer reading lessons. These lessons are for both native and non-native English speakers alike. I've tutored Elementary school students as well as adults in this skill area . During these lessons, we would focus on learning reading strategies, improving your reading speed and clarity, and learning new vocabulary.

If you want to start lessons with me simply follow 3 steps.

Step 1 - The first step is to complete a needs assessment so I can see how much you know and what you need to work on. Then I can create lessons to meet your needs.

Step 2- The second step is to set your goals. These should be SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, rewarding, and time-based. Think of what you want to do with the language and where and why you want to use it. Maybe you want to pass a test, get a better job, improve relationships with friends or coworkers, or maybe to help a child with homework. Whatever your goals are these will help me structure effective lessons to meet your needs and wants.

Step 3 - The third step is to book a one-on-one session with me on Wyzant.

That's it! I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals. Have a great day!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I teach English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have a graduate certificate and a Masters in TESOL. I have been teaching and tutoring ESL since 2007. I tutored English writing online to Hong Kong.

ESL/ESOL

I teach English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have a graduate certificate and a Masters in TESOL. I have been teaching and tutoring ESL since 2007. I especially love tutoring Pronunciation.

Grammar

I teach English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have a graduate certificate and a Masters in TESOL. I have been teaching and tutoring ESL since 2007. Grammar is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I have taught several Grammar classes at Utah Valley University.

Reading

I teach English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have a graduate certificate and a Masters in TESOL. I have been teaching and tutoring ESL since 2007. Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes and it's one of the first subjects I started to teach when I entered the ESL field.

Vocabulary

I teach English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have a graduate certificate and a Masters in TESOL. I have been teaching and tutoring ESL since 2007. Vocabulary is one of the things that helps students understand more in English. I usually teach this subject in several ways, through reading, speaking, lists of words the student finds he or she mispronounces or wants to learn, and the use of flashcards both online and with hard copies. Vocabulary is best learned when used in real life situations over and over until it sticks.
