Hola, soy Mateo! I have a Bachelor's in Psychology with a Minor in Latin American Languages and a Certificate in TESOL. I'm currently working on a Master's in Linguistics at BYU. As you can see, I love languages! I also have an interest in several hobbies, including Chess and Dungeons & Dragons. I think one of the best approaches to tutoring comes in connecting with people on a personal level in order to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages growth and learning. I will find a way to make our lessons relatable and meaningful to you. At the same time, I will challenge you! I strongly believe that we need to reach beyond our comfort zone in order to learn, and I am here to provide the scaffolding necessary for you to advance to the next level of understanding.
I have a couple of years of experience in tutoring in a variety of settings. During my time at Brigham Young University - Idaho, I ran over 500 tutoring sessions in the Reading Center. In those appointments, I helped university students achieve academic success through the application of study skills, supplemented with strategies in time management and goal setting. During the undergrad, I also tutored for 2 specific classes: Advanced Grammar in Languages (Lang 321) and Introduction to Psychology (Psych 111). Aside from these paid positions, I also volunteered as a tutor for two semesters in both the English Conversation Lab and the Spanish Conversation Lab, helping language learners become more fluent in their speech. As far as teaching goes, I have a little less than a year’s worth of experience in teaching English as a second language to adults. The school I taught at emphasized a communicative approach.
I bring an unparalleled enthusiasm to tutoring, and I’m excited to bring it to a lesson with you! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out. I am a lifelong learner, and so I am always open to feedback. Thanks!
