Hola, soy Mateo! I have a Bachelor's in Psychology with a Minor in Latin American Languages and a Certificate in TESOL. I'm currently working on a Master's in Linguistics at BYU. As you can see, I love languages! I also have an interest in several hobbies, including Chess and Dungeons & Dragons. I think one of the best approaches to tutoring comes in connecting with people on a personal level in order to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages growth and learning. I will find a way to make our lessons relatable and meaningful to you. At the same time, I will challenge you! I strongly believe that we need to reach beyond our comfort zone in order to learn, and I am here to provide the scaffolding necessary for you to advance to the next level of understanding.

I have a couple of years of experience in tutoring in a variety of settings. During my time at Brigham Young University - Idaho, I ran over 500 tutoring sessions in the Reading Center. In those appointments, I helped university students achieve academic success through the application of study skills, supplemented with strategies in time management and goal setting. During the undergrad, I also tutored for 2 specific classes: Advanced Grammar in Languages (Lang 321) and Introduction to Psychology (Psych 111). Aside from these paid positions, I also volunteered as a tutor for two semesters in both the English Conversation Lab and the Spanish Conversation Lab, helping language learners become more fluent in their speech. As far as teaching goes, I have a little less than a year’s worth of experience in teaching English as a second language to adults. The school I taught at emphasized a communicative approach.

I bring an unparalleled enthusiasm to tutoring, and I’m excited to bring it to a lesson with you! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out. I am a lifelong learner, and so I am always open to feedback. Thanks!

Approved Subjects

Chess

Chess

I currently have an 1810 rating in Rapid (10 minutes per side) on Lichess, which places me in the 83rd percentile for chess performance. I attend the Lindon Chess Club almost weekly. My favorite opening as white is the London System, though I've also done quite a bit with the Queen's Gambit and the Nimzo-Larsen attack. As black, I frequently use the Caro-Kann Defense, though I've recently been experimenting with the Owen Defense.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I taught English as a second language to adults at the US Ling Institute for two semesters. We mostly used a communicative teaching approach to help students of a variety of levels improve and prepare for the TOEFL. In the undergrad, I tutored Advanced Grammar in Languages (Lang 321) for a year; the course included material for the Praxis test. Additionally, I volunteered as a tutor in the English Conversation Lab for two semesters at Brigham Young University - Idaho.
Grammar

Grammar

I tutored Advanced Grammar in Languages (Lang 321) at Brigham Young University - Idaho for a year. This class is a requirement for students pursuing TESOL at BYUI, and it covers material present in the TOEFL test. I also aced college writing, which included grammar as a major element.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I tutored Advanced Grammar in Languages (Lang 321) for a year, and I have a certificate in TESOL. I am expected to graduate with an MA in Linguistics in April of 2027. My thesis is a sociolinguistic thesis titled "Demographic influence on forms of address in non-core family relationships."
Literature

Literature

I received a 4 on the AP Literature test in high school. Since then, I have frequently found myself reading works of literature that other students read in their English class, except I do it for fun. Examples include 1984, A Catcher in the Rye, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, among others.
Psychology

Psychology

I tutored Introduction to Psychology (Psych 111) for a semester. For two semesters, I was a mentor in the William James Mentorship Program at BYUI. I scored in the 97th percentile on the Psychology Major Field Test. My favorite classes from the undergrad were Cultural Psychology and The History and Systems of Psychology.
Spanish

Spanish

I've lived in Mexico, Argentina, and the Spanish-speaking part of the Bronx. I also received nine credits of Spanish at Brigham Young University - Idaho. Spanish tutoring experience includes two semesters in BYUI's Spanish Conversation Lab, and a couple months of online tutoring.
Tennis

Tennis

I played for 3 years in high school, reaching the number one doubles spot in my school. Now I play less frequently, but I still play from time to time. I'm more familiar with doubles strategies than with singles, but I have played singles with friends as well.
