Hello! I have a BS in Microbiology and an MS in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from Brigham Young University. I wrote my master’s thesis on how HIV mutants cause AIDS and how essential oils can affect the viability of SARS-CoV-2. I started tutoring in High School where I spent my summers tutoring ESL elementary school students. I tutored them helping them learn English at their pace. In my bachelor’s I tutored my colleagues in Spanish, calculus, and microbiology. During my master’s degree I designed and led the Molecular Biology Lab course as the Instructor on Record. During this time, I taught classes about PCR, Western Blots, DNA and protein isolation, and other key molecular techniques. During this time, I also worked as a teaching assistant for the senior level Virology course covering viral infection and host reactions to a variety of viruses. In both opportunities I tutored struggling college students and helped them earn a higher grade. I also was hired as a tutor for the student athletes, where I tutored students the topics of Virology and Immunology.
My approach to teaching is to first set goals and create plans with my students to focus on what they need. Then I strive to create an enjoyable environment where my students and I have fun and learn at the same time. I primarily teach using visuals and analogies to explain difficult topics in a way that my students understand. Since people learn differently, I have learned to adapt to individuals’ varying experiences to personalize their learning.
My main focus of tutoring is in Biology, with a focus on molecular and microbiology, though I have experience tutoring Spanish and English as second languages, and various math courses. I truly love science and love to explain it to others while helping them reach their own goals. I put in the work with my students to make sure they succeed. My main focus will always be to facilitate learning for my students and help them feel more confident in their individual abilities to learn.
