Hello! My name is Gabriela, and I am a 34-year-old experienced math teacher and tutor.
Currently, I'm in my fourth year of pursuing a Ph.D. in Math Education at San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego. I have recently relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah while I write my dissertation for the next few years. My extensive background in teaching mathematics--amassed over a decade of experience in tutoring as well as through my experience as a math teacher in the US, Korea, and Taiwan-- has exposed me to the limitations of traditional math education and hence the importance of student-centered learning.

I hold a Master's degree in Mathematics from Colorado State University, supplemented by an interdisciplinary focus in Education. My master's thesis was dedicated to enhancing professional development programs to better equip graduate students for teaching math. Currently, in my Ph.D. program, my research is primarily oriented toward promoting equity in the mathematics classroom. Moreover, my dissertation explores the parallels between problem-solving in rock climbing and mathematics through the lens of disability.

I have extensive experience teaching elementary courses through college courses, including SAT math, IB math, AP Calculus, and Algebra 1 and 2. My deep-rooted passion for mathematics and dedication to making it enjoyable and captivating for students of all ages is at the core of my teaching philosophy. I acknowledge the prevailing stigma around mathematics, which often reduces this beautiful domain to mundane calculations and stress-inducing tasks. As a math educator, I strive to shatter this stereotype and make math more fun and approachable, particularly for those who have built mental walls against it. I am confident in my unique skill to help students deeply understand mathematics through robust conceptual understanding. Rest assured, I strive to be the most relatable math teacher any student could have!

Math genius while being patient, kind and funny!!

Gabriela has been tutoring me to help me pass my AP Calculus AB exam for the past month. She is really patient ,smart and funny. She always explains the subjects in a way that I understand. I also like that we do a lot of examples of various difficulties to ensure that I fully understand each topic. She was able to explain concepts that I had been struggling for years. She also has a lot of patience because when I first started I knew nothing and I mean nothing of calculus and now (only after 5 lessons) I can understand what is going on in my class and even start doing practice problems online for the AP exam. I like how she does not assume you know previous knowledge on math as she goes over the basics to ensure that you are building a solid foundation in math and not starting mid air. Her teaching method is hands on learning as she does not just lectures about the subject but instead encourages you to always try different problems. She also gives a lot of tips for memorizing different equations and concepts that are very useful. Unlike my school teacher, she is very welcoming as she cares a lot about her students since she always encourages me to ask her for help on problems even outside of our sessions. I also have a very busy schedule and she has always been able to accommodate to that. I would 100% recommend her! Trust me you will not regret it!

Patient, Passionate, and Infracognitive.

Gabriela has been a compelling change for my son’s SAT preparation. Her deep mathematical understanding is matched with an outstanding ability to identify and scope rigorous areas where a student has an opportunity to grow. This ultimately makes her a truly unique candidate. Since the pandemic, my son has struggled with algebraic expressions, but after just a few sessions with Gabriela, he is now able to master algebraic reasoning. Her ability to observe and take advantage of these weak spots with such precision is unequivocally unparalleled. What sets Gabriela apart from other tutors is her novel approach to teaching. As she pursues her PhD in philosophy to Berkeley graduate school, she brings a novel perspective to math instruction, encouraging students to connect “abstract” concepts to real-world applications, so much so that she dislikes the use of the word “abstract” in any math instruction. I had the privilege of reading part of her dissertation, where she introduces an interesting method of teaching math through a bodily-kinesthetic lens, allowing students to understand and remember concepts in a more holistic way involving the movement of your arm rather than relying solely on the traditional whiteboard and marker. Gabriela’s patience and dedication is equally commendable. Whereas other tutors become frustrated with my son, she continues to be focused and supportive. This attitude has led to my son fully understanding each topic before moving on to the next unit. Her approach prioritized learning and comprehension, only introducing time management techniques once my son felt confident with the material. If you’re still left unconvinced that this tutor isn’t good for your son or daughter, the results should speak for themselves: my son went from scoring in the 45th percentile to an impressive 95th percentile. Gabriela is an outstanding tutor who combines expertise, passion, and a commitment to her students knowledge. I simply couldn’t have asked for a better mentor on this journey of standardized testing.

9th grader loved her! Very effective communicator.

My daughter has struggled and always lacked confidence in math. Algebra was no different, we engaged Gabriela early in the 2nd semester. Our daughter went from a C- to a B is just a few months. She no longer feared new units. She said Gabriela explained topics in a manner that was much more easier to understand. She's great!

Very patient!

I’m not the greatest at math and so she was super patient with me when it came to explaining concepts when I voiced I didn’t understand the initial approach. Overall she explains math in a very digestible way!
