In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught elementary school for seven years in rural schools, including a K-12 classroom, where average student achievement on standardized criterion-referenced tests progressed from two years below grade level to grade level in two years (4 grade-level achievement). I enjoyed working one-on-one with students in reading, language arts, history and math. Students were expected to work hard and master each concept. Students not achieving 80% on an assessment for each objective were required to take remediation and be retested until they demonstrated mastery. Then they were required to re-demonstrate mastery of each objective at the end of the year.
