I'm Cathy, and I have almost 30 years of experience in education. I spent about 25 years as a classroom teacher and about five years in administration. I have classroom experience teaching from early childhood through 6th grade, with most of my experience being in 4th - 6th grade; however, I have taught students middle school students, as well.
My teacher certifications include Texas certification as a Generalist 4th - 8th grade, as well as Math 4th - 8th grade. In addition, I have Montessori certification for Early Childhood (3-6 years old), Elementary I (grades 1-3), and Elementary II (grades 4-6). I have also completed a series of workshops on teaching gifted and talented students.
As both a teacher and as a tutor, my philosophy, derived from my Montessori training and experience, is to meet students where they are and work with them at a pace that is comfortable for them to meet their goals. While some concepts require memorization (i.e., math facts), my goal is to help students grasp underlying concepts to promote understanding. I am open to trying a variety of methods rather than expecting every student to respond to the same method. My ultimate goal is the success of the student.
I look at the relationship with parents as a team effort and welcome information from the parents that can help me to better serve the needs of the student.
I look forward to new opportunities to work with students and would love to hear from you and discuss how I can help meet your/your chid's educational needs.
