Samuel here! I have a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Texas Tech University, with a minor in Psychology, and I earned a Master’s degree in Philosophy at Western Michigan University. I also spent 4 years working toward a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Maryland. Though I did not complete the PhD for personal reasons, I wouldn’t trade my time pursuing Philosophy for anything. The word ‘philosophy’ literally means “love of wisdom” or “love of knowledge”, depending on your preferred translation from ancient Greek. In practice, it is all about the fundamental questions at the core of human understanding. The word ‘PhD’ even stands for “Doctor of Philosophy”. My specialty was the Philosophy of Cognitive Science, which typically meant I would research the latest developments in neuroscience and psychology to see how they apply to age-old philosophical questions about the mind.

I believe writing is thinking. In my 6 years of grad school, I taught many discussion sections as well as a handful of my own seminar-style courses, all of which were interactive experiences designed to get students thinking about the material in an active and independent way. I’ve also graded thousands of papers written by college students struggling to grapple with the very abstract concepts involved in Philosophy. These experiences taught me that one-on-one writing help can make a huge difference in student outcomes. There is nothing quite like helping students improve their writing and seeing them start to understand and process complex ideas better than they previously thought possible.

While I’m particularly skilled at helping with topics like Psychology and Philosophy, I am confident I can help just about anyone improve their academic writing. Whether you’re a younger student struggling at the grammatical level or an adult putting together a cohesive essay, I’m eager to help. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Logic

I have taken roughly 5 courses in Logic and Formal Epistemology, all but one of which were at the graduate level. I've also taught courses in critical thinking which were essentially baby logic. This is all in addition to Logic being at the heart of Philosophy, the subject of my 2 degrees and 4 years of PhD work.
