About James

Bio

I have been teaching and tutoring for 30 years. I have taught High School Social Studies, English, and Geometry, including several Advanced Placement courses. Although most of my teaching has been in Social Studies, most of my tutoring has been in Math. What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students gain confidence by giving them the tools they need to succeed.

I have been teaching and tutoring for 30 years. I have taught High School Social Studies, English, and Geometry, including several Advanced Placement courses. Although most of my teaching has been in Social Studies, most of my tutoring has been in Math. What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students gain confidence by giving them the tools they need to succeed.

In addition to teaching and tutoring, I live on a small farm with my wife and three children, We raise miniature dairy goats (milking by hand), miniature horses, alpacas (my daughters spin the wool into yarn), chickens, and Great Pyrenees dogs.

Math always came easily for me, until Geometry. I was totally lost, and then we moved. The new teacher gave me a passing grade, mostly because the last few weeks of school was a preview of Algebra II, which I had already taken. It wasn't until I started tutoring and had a student who wouldn't go to anyone else that I taught myself Geometry as I tutored the student.

I have always loved reading - reading almost anything. Growing up with a mom who had a degree in English and a dad with a degree in Journalism, grammar and spelling also came naturally to me. I enjoy passing that knowledge on to students.

I have successfully worked with many students with ADHD; as a face-to-face classroom teacher, as an in-person tutor, as an online teacher, and as a virtual tutor. I strive to keep the students focused and on-task. I also keep the tutoring sessions lively and interesting.

I have been a High School teacher for over 30 years. I have taught or tutored every High School subject, and have tutored students in all kinds of test prep - AP, SAT, ACT, COOP, HSPT, etc. I get results whether I tutor long-term or cramming for the test tomorrow.

I have been teaching and tutoring for 30 years. Many of my students/clients have been diagnosed with dyslexia. I have taken courses from the Neuhaus Center in Houston, and have earned 3 hours of Graduate credit in Reading from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

I am a reader. I have always been a reader, and I imagine I always will be a reader. Runs in the family - my 89 year-old mother recently sent me a list of the books she is reading (all 10 of them!). Like my mother, I got my degree in English; my father got his in Journalism, where I get my love for current events.

I taught at two different Catholic High Schools for a total of 10 years. I also served as Director of Youth Ministries at a Lutheran Church for 2 years, where I taught Sunday School, Wednesday night activities, and directed youth activities. I have also taught Sunday School classes at my current church, and have delivered messages at a home church.

As a teacher certified (lifetime) in History, I have also taught Social Studies. I had left teaching to assist teachers in improving their craft, and I let my Social Studies certification lapse. I have taught Government, Economics, and World Geography at the High School level; including Advanced Placement.

STAAR

I worked as an Education Specialist at one of Texas' Regional Education Learning Centers, where I helped guide 40 school districts from TAKS to STAAR. I also oversaw the introduction of new TEKS in Social Studies, and worked with the implementation of a state-wide curriculum management system. Finally, I worked as a Digital Learning Specialist, helping districts analyze data related to the STAAR testing program.

Explain subject matter well

My son really understood the US HISTORY that James was helping him with. He explained it very simply and concisely. He put things into simple thoughts and ideas that made the subject matter not seem so overwhelming.
