Hi, I'm Larissa! I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, and I am certified to teach Grades 1-8. I also have a Master of Business Administration degree in Accounting. I have taught middle school math, grades 6, 7, and 8 for 17 years, and I have coached UIL mathematics and number sense contests. I am currently teaching part time at my local college in the Adult Education GED program.
While teaching in a public school setting, I provided before and after school tutoring for students who needed a little extra practice or more clarification on any concepts. I have also tutored online for about 3 years, using the Remind platform. My students lived all over the United States, and they were in grades kindergarten up to 9th grade.
When I'm teaching a concept, I like to introduce new concepts with hands on activities to make the concept more understandable, and then move forward in steps, to just using the algorithm. When I tutor, I use the same process because I want to make sure my students have a good foundational understanding before moving forward. Taking the extra time to go backwards a bit and ensure a good solid foundation helps tremendously in the long run.
By using various methods and different ways of teaching, my students have encountered much success and therefore built their confidence in their skills and abilities. This leads to continued success and a greater love of learning.
