About Karen

Bio

I love teaching most because of the light that comes on in a student's eyes when they begin to grasp a new concept. I have 26 years of experience teaching students from age 4 through 6th grade in Deaf education, special education, and regular education, as well as teaching and tutoring adults. I also tutored my students and others outside of school during most of those years.

I have a Master's degree in Deaf education and a Bachelor's degree in elementary education, with certifications in PK-6th grade (birth-21 Deaf ed.), special education and ESL. While teaching full time, I also taught classes outside of school in American Sign Language.
As well as 10 years of experience in Deaf education, I have interpreted in several types of situations and taught American sign language to kids and adults alike. I was a BEI certified Sign Language Interpreter from 1997 through 2002. Most of my sign language was learned in real life settings with Deaf friends, followed up by various classes.
Teaching Deaf kids means a strong emphasis on language - helping students who often have significant language delays. Also, the majority of my teaching experience is in kindergarten, first and second grade, where learning to read and write is critical.
My years of experience in several different elementary schools in various locations has helped me learn how to reach students from a plethora of backgrounds and situations with diverse learning styles.
For your convenience, I prefer to come to you for your tutoring sessions, whether it be in your home, or we meet at a library or other location. I will help students with homework from school, use materials you choose yourself, or I am happy to provide all of the materials necessary for a successful tutoring environment.
Working with me will be beneficial for your academic success as well as fun, because we always learn and retain more when we are having fun!

Approved Subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in early childhood education. I have 17 years of experience teaching elementary students in public schools. In addition, I have been tutoring others from the time I was in elementary school myself.
Hard of Hearing

Hard of Hearing

I have a Master's degree in Deaf Education and I have 10 years of experience teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. My general education degree is in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, which require a strong emphasis on language - something on which Deaf and Hard of Hearing students also require an emphasis. My general education experience of 7 years was also in primary grades (PK - 2) where language is of utmost importance. My years in Deaf Education as well as training toward my Master's degree have also provided me with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage hearing aids and other assistive devices proficiently.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I am a certified elementary school teacher with 17 years of experience teaching 4 year olds through 6th grade. I have tutored in all subjects and use methods that are highly educational, motivational and tailored to the needs of each individual student. I have successfully tutored students one on one as well as small groups.
Sign Language

Sign Language

I have a Master's degree in Deaf Education, which required me to become fluent in American Sign Language. I also had many Deaf friends during this time who helped me become a proficient signer. From 1997 until 2002, I was a BEI certified sign language interpreter. After I began teaching Deaf students, I began teaching sign language classes outside of school as well.
Social Studies

Social Studies

During the course of my 17 years teaching elementary school, Social Studies was one of the core subjects that I taught. Typically, Social Studies was woven into our Language Arts studies as well. We would read and write about Social Studies topics and do projects involving all subjects. Social Studies included topics such as occupations; economy; state and national history, geography and symbols; and more.

Excellent instructor, great with teens

Karen has been a great instructor for our home schooled group of teens. She is knowledgeable, accessible and engaging. She is very prepared for each session and the kids have shown remarkable improvements. She makes the experience very positive and they are eagerly trying their techniques as soon as she leaves.

Experienced and Helpful

I like that she accommodates accelerated learning but also knows when to slow down so as not to lose focus or omit important information.
