Hello! I have a M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Georgetown, and a B.S. in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I currently teach high school chemistry. I love learning about and discussing scientific topics, and in addition to teaching the material I hope to impart some of that spark to my students. The key to understanding and retaining scientific concepts is to connect the disparate facts into a single system - for example, not just memorizing different types of reactions (although that's necessary), but being able to explain when and why each happens. Not only does this make the material more accessible, but it means that each new topic reinforces previous learning! I have taught in a small classroom setting (3-8 students) for elementary and high school students.
Every person has unique strengths and weaknesses, and one of the great advantages of tutoring is being able to find and capitalize on those strengths. In addition to specific course instruction, a student who is struggling may benefit greatly from help "learning how to learn", which is to say trying different ways of approaching the material to find what is easiest and most effective for them. This is something I am particularly passionate about - I went back to graduate school after I'd been working for several years and on top of maintaining my job (part-time), I had a family to consider while I was taking classes. But not only did I get my degree, I was second in my class and won both awards given by my department (academics and research, respectively). Of course, I worked very hard - but I also had to learn to make the absolute most of my time.
Whether you or your student is looking to go on to an academic career, a professional scientific career, or simply ace their chemistry and biology classes, I can help with not only learning and understanding the material, but also becoming a better student. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!
