After what has been a challenging time for students, I would love the opportunity to help your child reach the next milestone! I graduated with honors from Texas A & M University with a degree in Elementary Education. I am certified to teach pre-k through 6th grade in all content areas: math, reading, science, and social studies. I taught students in pre-k, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade for a total of 29 years in the public school system and have tutored for about a year and a half. I have seen the profound role that reading plays in all subject areas. When I help your child in Reading, first I will administer an assessment. This gives me information about your child's ability to decode words and comprehend text. It guides me in selecting future books that will build upon your child's strengths while at the same time promote growth. During each lesson, I will zero in on and address your child's weaknesses. I firmly believe every student needs a variety of strategies in their tool bag to grow as a reader: checking the picture, looking for smaller chunks, using context clues, and reading for meaning. I can provide your child with those tools!
When it comes to math, I have discovered that modeling is key - whether it be with manipulatives or pictures. I will show your child how to solve problems in a variety of ways; I believe in "thinking out loud" and using "math talk" and encourage my students to do the same. When your child is able to explain how a problem was solved, I know they understand the concept and are ready to move on. Whether learning addition strategies, using place value to recognize patterns, or subtracting 2 or 3 digit numbers, I can help your child to have confidence in solving problems and enjoy math again!
A former Teacher of the Year, I delight in helping students succeed. Half the battle is getting children to believe in themselves. I would love the opportunity to help your child make gains over the next few months and beyond!

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a public school teacher for 29 years and taught pre-k, kindergarten, and 2nd grade. I taught all content areas including reading, math, science, and social studies. My students consistently made progress in their reading ability and scored well on district wide math assessments. During guided reading and math intervention, I worked with individual students to target and improve areas of concern.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

If your child is struggling in math I can help! Whatever the concept (addition and subtraction, place value, fractions, geometry, etc.), I have found that a systematic approach works best. Modeling, Guided Practice, and "Math Talk" will eventually lead to your child growing in confidence and working independently!
Phonics

Phonics

I was a Kindergarten teacher for 19 years and taught hundreds of children to read, so whether your child has yet to begin reading or has just gotten started, I can help! Your child will understand the connection between written and spoken language as we zero in on letter/sound relationships. Depending on your child's needs, we will work on individual letters and sounds, blends, or smaller "chunks" within words. Over time, practice will make progress, and your child will have the tools needed to decode words and become a confident reader!
Reading

Reading

As an Elementary School teacher, I have seen the importance Reading plays in all subject areas! Students need to be able to comprehend what they read, and I can help to develop those skills. As your child reads aloud, I will use questioning strategies to address vocabulary, story elements (Setting, Characters, and Plot), making predictions, inferencing, cause and effect, and more. Over time, your child will find the joy in reading for meaning!
Writing

Writing

Having been an elementary school teacher for 28 years, I find great joy in helping students become budding authors. I use mentor texts to demonstrate creative writing craft moves as well as grammar concepts. I guide students in incorporating those new skills in their own work. I provide templates that encourage students to begin the writing process, whether it be to write a narrative, realistic fiction, a procedural text, or a poem.
