Political Science (Political Theory, Philosophy, Political Issues and Public Policy, Texas Politics, Civics, AP US Government, International Relations, Global Politics, Interest Groups, Comparative Politics, Ideologies, Basic Game Theory)

When it comes to test preparation, I start off by identifying my students' weaknesses through a diagnostic test. After reviewing the diagnostic, I focus our sessions on working through the types of questions the student is struggling on, assigning homework and practice tests as needed. My sessions are typically a mix of teaching content and strategies with an emphasis on learning concepts and guiding the student to the right answer.

My personal tutoring philosophy has always centered on student learning. I do not believe that learning happens when a student is disengaged or uninterested in what they're learning. I strive to create a relaxed and fun learning atmosphere, and I pride myself on being inclusive and patient with my students. I highly encourage anyone to contact me if they want to schedule a lesson or if they have any questions. Let's schedule a lesson and get started!

What are your test prep qualifications/experience? I have previously worked at a test prep center in Houston, TX called Solutions Education, where I primarily tutored SAT/ACT English, among other subjects. I also have prepared students to take the US History STAAR test in the spring of 2022. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is your teaching style? I utilize several textbooks and complementary teaching materials for my sessions. I tend to lecture on the material, asking questions and verifying understanding as we go. I also have my students do plenty of practice problems in session and assign homework and weekly practice tests. While I have high expectations for all of my students (regardless of score), I keep a relaxed atmosphere where students can be themselves and feel comfortable. Having worked with a variety of students, I have enough experience to know how to tailor my teaching style to fit the student’s needs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do you structure your class? That depends on the request (e.g., what sections to tutor), how close the test date is, and what the student’s scores are. Generally, assuming we’re 1-2 months away from the test and we’re doing 2-3 hours of tutoring per week, divided into biweekly sessions, I use the first session of the week to review the practice test the student has taken from the week prior and integrate a short lesson. I use the second session for a longer lesson or multiple short lessons and assign the next practice test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What materials do you use? I use a combination of hand-picked textbooks and field-tested materials that I’ve written myself. Depending on the test and sections that I am tutoring, I can point to where you can buy the textb

In 2016, I received a 5 on the AP English Language & Composition exam. I understand the exam and I have taught students the same strategies that helped me achieve a perfect score. My focus is on helping students understand what good and bad essays look like and how to "mechanically" read passages. Additionally, my experience as a proofreader gives me a solid background in helping students draft quality essays.

Politics is my passion. I have been involved in politics since I was in high school and I have worked to stay up-to-date with current events in politics and research in the field of political science. Working with political science students also gives me an opportunity to learn more about my field of interest. I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Trinity University, cum laude. While most of my coursework focused on political theory and other qualitative courses, I am also familiar with the following subfields: -Philosophy -Political Issues and Public Policy -Texas Politics -Civics -International Relations/Affairs -Global Politics -Interest Groups -Ideologies Outside of academia, I remain heavily involved in politics. This involvement includes working as a deputy chief of staff to a gubernatorial candidate, writing for an on-campus political magazine in college, presenting research at the WPSA (Western Political Science Association), and attending my party's national convention as a state delegate. While I have my own views, I always strive to remain as neutral as possible with my students. I pride myself on being open and inclusive to my students regardless of personal views. I always thoroughly prepare for my sessions in advance regardless of the content that I am covering. Schedule a lesson with me today!

I scored in the 97th percentile for the AWA section (5.5) and the 95th percentile for the Verbal section (165). As a GRE Verbal and AWA specialist, I assist students with their reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary, and argumentative skills. I can help break down the sentence completion and reading passages as well as emphasize which vocab words are need-to-know. I also use homework assignments and frequent practice tests to help with speed and accuracy.

Great tutor!

Zachary has been working with our daughter for English SAT prep to compliment her Princeton Review class with 1:1 guidance and my daughter finds his sessions helpful. Initially we were concerned that the two approaches may conflict with each other, but everything has been great and we are looking forward to seeing her English scores improve. We recommend Zachary for SAT prep.

Patient and Reassuring Tutor

Zachary N. has helped me with the AWA section of the GRE. When I first started with him, I was very stressed and overwhelmed with how much I have to study in order to improve my writing score. However, from our first initial meeting, I could tell from his composure that he truly cared about specifically formatting future sessions in a way that would help me the most. With our regular practice and feedback discussions, over time my critical thinking and ability to improve my writing to the point of eloquentness and conciseness drastically saw an effect. Overall, my score improved from a 3.0/6 - 4.5/6, and I could not have done this without his support and positive pep talks even in bad moments.

Knowledgeable, patient, and understanding tutor

Zachary taught me and reviewed with me all of the reading and writing topics on the SAT that I have struggled with. In addition, he gave me tips and tricks on things that I have never learned until now, and that I now use in my English class. Zachary is very effective in teaching new topics, by going over study material and answering any question presented. He is patient and understanding of my learning process. I especially appreciate the homework he assigns because it always has purpose and is immensely beneficial practice that had I not worked with Zachary, I would not have prioritized or valued. Zachary has done very well to adapt to the new digital format of the SAT, providing me with new review materials specifically for the digital test. He paid particular attention to my areas of difficulty and took specific time during sessions to address and help in those areas. Zachary has helped me improve my SAT English scores from scoring in the 550s to almost consistently a 700 or sometimes even more. He has also provided me with tips and advice for test day to help combat my test anxiety. I feel much more confident and prepared to take the SAT than I did before starting my lessons with Zachary. - Amulya

Excellent Tutor

My son took lessons with Zachary with the goal of improving his SAT English score. Zachary proved to be an excellent tutor. His lesson plans were well organized and tailored to my son’s needs. Zachary started with an assessment test before the first lesson to gauge my son’s strengths and weaknesses. During each lesson, Zachary focused on the weak areas and also taught my son some important test taking strategies. Additionally, he gave homeworks / tests to be completed between lessons to assess my son’s progress at each step. Thanks to Zachary, my son achieved the score he was hoping for when he took the SAT again. I will highly recommend Zachary to any student preparing for SAT English.

I needed help with game theory for my politics class and Zachary is one of the few poli sci tutors on Wyzant that has knowledge of it. He is very patient and clear in his teaching. Difficult concepts become very easy to understand after he explained them. Thank you!
