My major was in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, both subjects I feel passionately about, as well as education in general. I believe that my enthusiasm for math and science based classes and my desire to help others learn is one of my strengths as a tutor, and has been the focus with the majority of my clients up to this point. I am also qualified, however, to help students with reading and writing.
I have worked with a variety of students, from students seeking a competitive edge, to students who are struggling with a particular subject, or may be trying to cope with general learning issues. I recognize that each student I work with has different needs and I customize a plan for each individual. I identify the purpose of our time together, how they have been performing up to that point, how they have been approaching the material and use a variety learning tools and tactics to approach the subject matter. However, I still feel like the best thing I can do is to try and make learning fun!
I look forward to working with you and your student and helping them learn to enjoy learning! My major was in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, both subjects I feel passionately about, as well as education in general. I believe that my enthusiasm for math and … Read more
We found out about Laurel through friends and we could not be more pleased with her! She has not only raised my daughter's grade but she has made her confident once again! She has also been very helpful with scheduling issues so she can meet with our daughter the night before a test. The results of Laurel's tutoring have raised our daughter's grade an entire letter grade in just 3 sessions!
She is very patient and helps my son slow down and work through the problems to gain understanding. She is flexible in scheduling sessions and is punctual.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While obtaining my degree in Biology, I took several classes relating specifically to genetics. In addition to my freshmen level Biology courses which had a large emphasis in basic genetic processes, I took both a general Genetics lecture and lab as well as a Human Genetics course. I also took Molecular Biology and Evolutionary Biology. I specifically chose elective courses with an emphasis in genetics and molecular processes since I found that they were my primary biology-related interests. I excelled in all of these courses, and frequently led or helped lead student formed study groups for the classes. I feel that my enthusiasm will allow me to be particularly effective tutor for this subject.
In addition to a degree in biology, I also have a minor in Chemistry. To do so I had to take two semesters of Organic Chemistry, which included two lecture courses and two lab courses. I particularly excelled in Organic I, and led a study group over a large portion of the semester. Of all my chemistry classes, I found that I enjoyed organic the most and, while I have not formally tutored for this course, I think that my enjoyment of the subject will be very beneficial to helping other students master the material.
