Hi! My name is Tara and while I graduated from Southwestern University with a major in Biology (Pre-med track) and a minor in Spanish, my love has always been math, which lead me to becoming a math teacher and tutor. I am a certified 8-12 Math teacher and I have taught Algebra I, Geometry, and Geometry Pre-AP at the high school level in Fort Bend ISD and have tutored students in elementary math, Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Math Models, and Algebra II. I have also helped two adult learners pass their 8-12 Math Certification tests so that they can teach high school math and helped a student pass the math portion of the GED. I am also currently working on completing my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership thru Lamar University. One of the best parts of teaching was tutoring the students before and after school because I could work one-on-one with them and really help them understand the material. If a student is willing to learn and work hard, then I can teach them. I relate well with students and am extremely patient when a student cannot understand the material right away. I have a passion for learning and I will share that passion with students. I want to make a difference in students' lives by inspiring them to reach their full potential just as my teachers made a difference for me.

When tutoring, I believe it is extremely important for the student to learn by doing. I emphasize the importance of taking notes in class (and help my students learn how to take useful notes) and then actually using them! You'd be surprised how many students never look at their notes again once they leave the classroom. If a student is having trouble in a certain area and cannot complete a problem even after searching their notes, then we will work one or two examples together. Then it is their turn. If they are still having trouble, I ask questions to lead them in the right direction. In the areas where students are really struggling, I will relate the problem to the student, or will give them an alternate way to solve

Basketball

Basketball

From 1st until 6th grade, I was in a group called PIPS (Players in Progress) where we learned ball-handling skills and performed at high school basketball games during half-time. We even did a half-time show for the Harlem Globetrotters in Austin, TX when I was in 6th grade. I played basketball for 7 years and played AAU basketball for 5 years. I love teaching the skills of the game and ball-handling.
Soccer

Soccer

I played high school soccer all four years at Westlake High School (3 at the Varsity Level) and obtained numerous awards including honorable mention all-district my sophomore and junior years and First Team All-district my senior year (the highest award). My senior year our team made it to the 5A regional finals (2002). I then went on to play soccer in college at Southwestern University all four years and currently hold the record there for the best save percentage in my career. Lastly, I have coached JV girls soccer for two year at the high school level and have assisted the varsity coach in making playoffs both years I coached.
Swimming

Swimming

I began swimming when I was less than two years old and swam for 7 years on teams including one year in college at Southwestern University. My specialty was breast-stroke, but I also swam various freestyle events and the IM (the Individual Medley) which includes all four strokes (freestyle, breast-stroke, butterfly, and back-stroke).

Great tutor

Tara is wonderful! She is exactly the kind of teacher you pray your kids will get in school. She is knowledgeable, positive, and a good teacher. We have already seen a big improvement in our daughter's grade and understanding of geometry. My daughter told me that when she takes a quiz now in geometry she can hear Tara in her head saying, "Ok, now what do you think you should do next to solve this?" My only regret is that we didn't begin working with Tara earlier.

Very Happy

Emma was very happy and felt really good about actually remembering things. She's very excited to continue tutoring with Tara for the SAT and for Algebra II.

Understanding, patient, & encouraging!!

Tara took the time to TALK with my 13yr old daughter first and find out what was going on in her Spanish class, what was being taught, how she studied, and just getting to know her. This allowed my very shy daughter to open up freely and start listening to what Tara had to say and suggest. I could see my daughter's confidence already being boosted by that one interaction!

Awesome!

Tara is awesome! My son is a freshman in high school, but has struggled with math since he started school. We had a tutor the last couple of years that he did not really connect with, and that seemed impatient and annoyed when my son did not get it right away. Tara is very patient, and shows my son different ways to do the algebra if one way doesn't work. He is ADD and she takes that into account as well. He also connects with her really well and they have things in common. He just made an 88 on an algebra quiz when the class average was a 59! Thanks to Tara! I have already booked her for geometry next year!

Made all the difference!

We hired Tara to help our daughter pass a math exam needed for school admittance that she had already failed twice. Tara was able to immediately identify where she was going wrong and make suggestions to help her make corrections and refresh her math skills appropriately. She was empathetic and encouraging and after just a few sessions with Tara, my daughter returned to the exam with confidence and passed it with an A! Highly recommend Tara as a tutor!

Awesome Teaching Skills & Attitude

Tara tutored sessions with my 12 year old daughter to prepare her for the math section of the SAT test. She quickly responded to my first inquiry regarding her availability. She was extremely knowledgeable in math and I was very impressed with her teaching style with a 12 year old. We will continue to use Tara as our tutor.

Great connection!

My son is a little shy but he is very comfortable with Tara. She is a great tutor for him, very patient and breaks down the material in a way for him to understand it more clearly. I like her flexibility and I would highly recommend her.

Great tutor.

Tara is a very helpful tutor. She has a great personality with my children and is always willing to do whatever it takes to help them understand the material. Tara is also very patient and works with my children at the same level they are on. No matter what it takes she is always there to help not to mention how she is very encouraging and uplifting to my children. Since my children have started with Tara their performance in school has gone up as did their grades. Tara helps my children achieve their greatest ability and teaches them several ways to approach different things in school like studying and taking tests. Most importantly Tara really understands the material she teaches very well which gives me confidence that I'm putting my children in the right hands.

Awesome math tutor

Tara is a great tutor. My daughter needed help with Algebra and Geometry. Tara was not only an effective tutor but she instilled confidence in my daughter. She is very reliable and flexible. She was even able to meet with her on Sundays. I have used several tutors over the years but Tara was the best by far.
