I'm Karen! I graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in advertising, but always knew teaching was my real passion. As my own children got older, I went back to school and received a teaching certification from the University of Houston. As a former Texas public-school educator with 10 years of experience, I taught 3rd grade students (ages 8-9), and 5th grade students (ages 10-11). I worked daily with students in small groups, and individually in a classroom setting. I've also led after-school tutoring sessions to prepare students for state-mandated testing. Currently I have over a year of private tutoring experience.
Getting to know the students I tutor is so important to me and it helps me understand how they feel about school, and any challenges they have. Assessing my students comes next to determine what they know about the subject matter and what type of learning style my students have. With engaging and relevant learning resources (online and on paper), I tutor my students in a fun and rewarding atmosphere. As we progress, I continually assess and collaborate with my students, changing lessons as needed based on their understanding of the material. Effective and timely communication with parents is crucial for my students' success.
My ultimate goal for my students is to continue to build their confidence and motivate them to learn and succeed in the classroom and in life. I am easy to reach and will respond quickly; contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a lesson!
