I graduated from Penn State with a business degree in 2000 and went back to school at Houston Community College to get my associates degree in Graphic Design and graduated in 2023.
While looking for jobs, I decided to try tutoring and found that I really enjoy it. I have been a tutor for almost 2 years.
At Club Z Tutoring, I work with elementary students in math, reading, and writing at their home or at a meeting location. I have experience working with students that are dyslexic and that have ADHD. I have worked with Club Z Tutoring for one year.
In becoming a tutor, I have wanted to learn and sharpen my skills. I have a certificate from the TEA for dyslexia and a certificate from Coursera in tutoring and teaching math for understanding in which you learn about different methods to teach math. The method that I use is conceptual learning. I make sure the student understands the concept behind the mathematics. I believe if a student does not understand the concept, then they may have trouble moving on to the next level.
If a student is struggling, I go back to find out where they got lost or what concepts they don’t understand and then start them from that level.
I have worked with students in reading and writing and making sure they understand what they are reading. I work with them on comprehension, spelling and author’s purpose. Also, I believe that they need to understand certain structure before they can write a good essay.
I have also worked with students in preparation for STAAR, which is the Texas assessment testing that all students in grades 3-12 have to take. My focus for this assessment is on math.
In conclusion, I have worked with many students in the past two years who are at different skill levels, having different strengths and weaknesses, and even disabilitiesI really enjoy working one-on-one with them and I believe that is the best way to focus on their needs for their education.
