Hi! I’m Roger, a certified English Language Arts teacher with more than 10 years of experience helping students improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. I’m certified in both Texas and Washington, D.C., have UK QTS status, and hold dual bachelor's degrees in English and Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. Although I’m a Texas native, I’ve taught primarily overseas, in Taiwan and China, helping international school students from grades 3-12 prepare for success in American middle schools, high schools, and universities.
I specialize in helping students build strong academic English skills, whether they are preparing for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, SSAT, or MAP, working on school assignments, or writing college application essays. For several years, I taught English to international students in Shanghai, many of whom were preparing to study abroad. I also have a professional background in test prep content development, having created thousands of SAT and ACT practice questions for EdTech companies. This experience gives me valuable insight into test structure and strategy, which I use to help students improve their scores efficiently and confidently.
My tutoring approach is student-centered, supportive, and results-focused. I tailor each session to meet the student's individual needs, whether that's building stronger essays, improving reading comprehension, boosting test performance, or developing confidence in academic English. I also speak conversational Mandarin Chinese, which can help explain complex ideas when needed, although I encourage full English immersion whenever possible. Above all, I strive to create a positive learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and motivated to reach their goals.
