I love to teach and am patient with the student, whatever the learning pace may be. I have a can-do attitude and an encouraging personality. I've trained many pharmacy employees to do the more difficult tasks of a technician, and having worked with many personalities, understand the need for patience, and the reward of watching someone succeed.

Background:
I graduated in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry. I have a strong foundation in the sciences, including general biology & chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

I have experience in lab techniques for all of these subjects. I also have a well-rounded, successful writing background, in both general and scientific research formats, as well as persuasive, problem/solution, and informative essays.
I am a certified and registered pharmacy technician and worked in the pharmacy for ten years. I am passionate about the pharmaceutical field and medical-related scientific research. In a pharmaceutical retail setting I have mastered all skills and knowledge that can be acquired hands-on in the work field. I can teach and train for all areas of this job, including testing for certification.
In a laboratory setting, I have succeeded in techniques learned alongside classes I have taken, and spent my last year of my undergrad working as a research assistant for my professor.

Currently, I hold a science specialist position at an early college high school, where I teach IPC, biology, chemistry, physics.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

BS in Biology, minor in chemistry
Botany

Botany

I have successfully completed a botany course, including lab and lecture, required of science majors by SHSU. I can assist a student in learning and understanding the following topics: Introduction to science, botany, and chemistry; macromolecules; plant cells; cell types; cell function; energy; photosynthesis; glycolysis; citric acid (krebs) cycle; genetics; DNA and biotechnology; plant tissue and organs; roots; stems; leaves; flowers; seeds; hormones; tropisms; nutrition; transport; plant ecology; plant ecosystems; taxonomy.
Chemistry

Chemistry

General chemistry I: chemical changes and laws governing them; nomenclature; introduction to thermodynamics; reactions involving oxygen, hydrogen, acids, bases, and salts; ionization; metathesis; the periodic table, and atomic and molecular structure. General Chemistry II: descriptive chemistry; gas laws; equilibria; kinetics; thermodynamics; electrochemistry; oxidation-reduction reactions. Organic Chemistry I & II: See description under organic chemistry.
Genetics

Genetics

I have successfully completed the genetics course, including lecture and lab, required for biology majors at SHSU. Topics covered included: Mendelian genetics, cytogenetics, gene expression and regulation, molecular basis of genetics, and gene technologies. I have also successfully completed an enhanced writing course and lab in molecular biology. This was a hands-on course of the structure and function DNA, protein, and other associated molecules. The course emphasized electrophoretic technique and gene-cloning. In addition to these courses, I have a year of experience working in the lab performing PCR and electrophoresis.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I have successfully completed a general microbiology lecture and lab as well as a medical microbiology course. I also have a year of experience working in the Microbiology lab.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I have completed both organic chemistry I & II, mastering all topics that make up this area of chemistry. Passing each part was dependent upon not only testing by the professor, but in addition, a standardized final prepared by the American Chemical Society. I can assist a student with the following topics: Organic Chemistry I includes structure and properties of organic molecules, including alkanes, alkenes, & alkynes; stereochemistry; alkyl halides: nucleophilic substitution & elimination reactions. Organic Chemistry II includes structure, synthesis, and reactions of alcohols; properties of and reactions involving ethers, epoxides, sulfides, aromatic compounds, ketones, aldehydes, amines, carboxylic acids & derivatives; infrared, mass, UV, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; conjugated systems; orbital symmetry.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I teach high school chemistry and physics, and minored in chemistry in college. These subjects require one to be proficient in Prealgebra.
STAAR

STAAR

I have 4 years of experience in preparing students to take the STAAR EOC exams for biology and algebra I. I analyze prior years scores and benchmark scores and compare results to STAAR standards and objectives, and work with students to strengthen their understanding of the course content.
Zoology

Zoology

I have successfully completed the zoology lecture and lab required of science majors by SHSU. I have gained a full understanding of the following topics and can assist studends seeking to do the same: Introduction to evolutionary & ecological principals of biology; emphasis on animal anatomy, behavior, ecology, taxonomy, and lab dissection technique.

Extremely patient and knowledgeable tutor.

Afifa has been working with my daughter in math for the past year. My daughter transitioned from private school to public school last year, and she was behind in math. She would have never been able to catch up without tutoring. Afifa does more than just help with homework. She is fabulous at teaching the material and making sure the student actually understands the concepts they are working on. She has a great rapport with kids. In fact, my daughter wanted to continue working over the summer! I can't say enough things about Afifa; 5 stars is not enough.

Great lesson.

Afifa helped Hunter figure out a faster way of calculating slope. He showed me by acquiring any two points and calculating them. Very impressed! Even I learned something new!
