I have a Master's Degree in Nursing. Even as a child, I wanted to teach, so being the oldest sibling, I taught my younger sisters what I had learned at school each day. I became a nurse because I wanted to help people who had healthcare problems. I was able to complete both the BSN and MSN programs and I have worked in various nursing positions. Some of those include hospital nursing, Home Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and most recently, I have taught nursing at North Central Texas College [11 years] and Midwestern State University [6years].
My teaching included lesson plans, exam preparation, follow-up remediation, collaboration with other teaching instructors and successfully preparing the students to pass their licensure exams [NCLEX-RN]. I noted that some students do not always understand the concepts presented in a large group. There may be distractions or the concepts are complex and the student has difficulty understanding. I enjoyed the remediation, or tutoring process, because I was able to help the student on a one-to-one basis by dissecting the concept into smaller, more simple ideas, eliciting the student's understanding and correcting any misconceptions. This was important to me as the instructor to prepare a student to successfully and safely care for patients with healthcare needs, and important to the student to feel confident and knowledgeable to provide that are for their clients. Since my questions followed the NCLEX format, the students felt more confident when they actually took the licensure exam.
