My name is Alyssa and I am in the process of going through a Ph.D. program. I am originally from Minnesota where I got my bachelors in Environmental Sciences from Saint Mary's University in Winona. During my time in Winona I tutored my peers to help them succeed in Calculus I. It wasn't easy tutoring others at first, since different people understood things in different ways. But once I learned how to communicate information in different ways to my peers, I was able to learn how to be a better tutor, and instructor. After I graduated with honors as a part of the TriBeta Biology Honors Society, I moved to Mankato to receive my Master's degree in Biology at Minnesota State University. From my masters I published two scientific papers and gained teaching experience with college levels labs, including Introductory Biology and General Ecology. I honestly didn't like teaching labs at first. It was new to me and I didn't like the lecture aspect of the labs. But I eventually learned a confidence for teaching, as well as for presenting the information to my students. Once I moved to Texas I gained experience teaching multiple different labs including Limnology, Organismal Biology, Wetlands, Economic botany, Field Biology of Plants, and General Ecology. Because of my wide variety of experiences with teaching I learned that I eventually want to be a professor at a college one day. After I complete my PhD and go through a post-doctoral program of course.
I have experiences of tutoring 1 on 1 with students, as well as tutoring in group settings (1 to 5 students). When I taught labs the typical class size was 15 to 25 students. Outside of teaching in a classroom setting, I also have experience with teaching children and adults how to swim. I taught swim lessons with Swim America in Minnesota from 2016 to 2018. I have taught one child who had special learning needs, but once I learned the best way to communicate with him he learned the fastest out of the previous kids I had taught. So I only worked with him for a month.
