I have always loved watching a student's face when things finally click for them and they begin to understand something that has been confusing them.
My experience with ESL, TOEFL and other standardized tests:
I spent two semesters teaching ESL as a student teacher in Bangalore, India, and 3 years teaching ESL to adults and 4th and 5th grades in Ankara, Turkey. I worked full-time for an intensive English program for the past 7 years, first as an instructor, and later as a program administrator, with a program focused on academic English for university bound students, so preparing students for college level work is a specialty. I also regularly teach students general standardized test taking skills, score well on standardized tests myself, and worked for 2 years as an iBT TOEFL speaking rater.
My experience with K-12 students and university writing:
I worked with students age 5-17 in all subjects through the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home. Most students were semesters behind in school from family circumstances, and many had learning disabilities like ADHD and dyslexia. I later worked as a writing consultant for college students in my senior year at the LSU-Shreveport University Writing Center.
I currently work as the Learning Specialist supervising the Academic Coaching program with the University of Houston- Clear Lake. I work with students who are performing well and want to perfect certain skills, international students adjusting to a culturally different education system, and many students with physical, emotional, or learning related challenges.
I am open to any subject K-6, English/literature/writing or social sciences 7-12, English/literature/writing at the high school level, TOEFL/IELTS/SAT verbal and writing test prep, and any level or age of ESL, formal or informal. I am excellent with accent reduction/correction; I have taken a professional and academic interest in phonology.
I am also fluently bilingual; my second language is Turkish and my level is near-native. I regularly teach spoken and written Turkish as a Second Language to people of various levels and backgrounds, and am also available to work on reading and writing for native speaking children who attend school in English and need to become literate in Turkish.
I have a Master's in Education with an ESL concentration. About half of my courses are specifically focused on ESL, the other half come from general K-12 education.
Please contact me if I can assist you or your child with your English or Turkish, preparing for an exam, or catching up/getting ahead in school. I have always loved watching a student's face when things finally click for them and they begin to understand something that has been confusing them.

I am happy to offer a rate of $45/hr for lessons in 2 or 3-hr blocks for non-TOEFL. I can also adjust rates where little or no lesson prep is needed, such as homework help vs pre-planned teaching.
I can speak very little English. We have a conversation about various topics in addition to an exercise of the pronunciation in her lesson.
She is a very good tutor hearing my story patiently.
I took several tutoring sessions from Rebecca to improve my TOEFL scores to apply for dental school. Let me tell you...she is amazing! She is extremely friendly and patient as well as obviously being dedicated and genuinely caring about her students. My scores went from 89 (R21, L25, S23, W20) to 100 (R22, L27, S24, W27) in just over a month!!! Honestly, words cannot describe how happy I was after receiving that second score report. Obviously, it's not easy but if you put in the time and effort with Rebecca guiding you, it's absolutely possible. By the way, I am now attending dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University. Thank you so much Rebecca! -Carolina
Rebecca is adept at teaching to a variety of learning styles - even two at a time as my husband and I apparently learn by very different methods! She is patient, knowledgeable and makes learning Turkish a LOT of fun! Her lesson plans are appropriately challenging and adapt to our rate of progress.
We would highly recommend her!
We had another lesson from Rebecca, and as usual she did an outstanding job. She has been working with my daughter with her English and word math problems. My daughter cannot wait until the next lesson. My wife has seen the progress that our daughter has made, so now my wife wants to have lessons from Rebecca as well.
I have been with Rebecca for more than six months, She basically teaches me accent reduction and pronunciation, reading and sometime grammar. Her speeches during class are very clear, very patient and always find a way to make it work and let students learn better. Rebecca has a rich background of ESL and has been dealing with students from all over the world. I’m very satisfied with her being my tutor and our relationship go beyond teacher and student. In a word, you won’t go anything wrong if find Rebecca.
I needed to get 26 on speaking section of TOEFL for my professional license. I took the test twice and didn't reach my goal. So I decided to get somebody to explain to me what I was doing wrong, and what changes I needed to make so I could achieve my goal. Rebecca is a ESL Teacher and used to be grader for TOEFL, specifically for the speaking section. Do you need somebody better than that? I don't think so.
She listened to my recordings, showed me exactly how these questions are graded, and what I needed to improve. She also helped with my pronunciation. If a word is very common, and you pronounce it wrong, your score will decrease. I practiced with a voice recorder. I recorded myself over and over until I got it right. I was more confident this time. I took the test and reached my goal!
I believe that having a tutor (that understands how the speaking part is graded) listening and grading your answers is the best way to achieve the desirable 26 and above on the speaking section.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's in Education in Curriculum and Instruction, including special education coursework. Experienced in tutoring elementary students in standard K-6 curriculum: phonics, handwriting, reading, writing, spelling, social studies, math and science.
I can help your child to visualize math through creative use of hands-on activities and pictures. I struggled in math in later elementary school and junior high, which gives me empathy for students having a difficult time in math, but also gives me a better understanding of how they are more likely to approach and understand math. I have 3 years experience working with elementary and junior high students in math, from remedial to honor roll students.
I have a knack for breaking down grammar and presenting it in a way that makes sense. I have taught and tutored common high school and college literature over the years, leading students through the process of analyzing characters and motives, imagery and symbolism. I regularly work with students struggling in spelling, introducing them to sets of works with the same spelling to help increase their understanding and retention. I work with students regularly to improve their writing through learning to form and check for complete sentences, capitalization, punctuation, adequate transitions, and logical organization.
I am a highly experienced, qualified, and effective ESL instructor. My objective is to not only correct and teach students, but teach them methods of correcting and practicing by themselves so that ultimately they are responsible for their own learning and can keep improving their language skills in everyday life outside the classroom. I have worked with children, business professionals, and young adults preparing for university for the last 13 years, and teach for the ESL program on the campus of UHCL. Pronunciation is probably my favorite area (I can work miracles with an accent if you're willing to work hard!), but I help many students improve in every area- listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Grammar Queen! I have worked for many years as an instructor or program director in English as a Second Language. My training and teaching experience have caused me to develop an unusual level of understanding the "how" and "why" of grammar, and I can explain it in an easy, logical format for anyone. If you need help with grammar for speaking purposes (such as speeches and presentations) or writing (essays and research papers), contact me through Wyzant and I'd love to discuss how I can help you.
I have experience teaching letters and corresponding sounds, consonant blends, diphthongs, spelling and sound pattern to students of all ages, native and non-native speakers of English alike.
I have experience developing study skills in students of all ages, including skills in organization, note taking, memory aids, pre-reading and scanning text, self-assessment, prioritizing tasks and time management.
