Experienced Tutor in History and German

Hi y'all, my name is Max! I hold bachelor’s degrees with Honors in History and German Studies, as well as a Distinction in Research and Creative Works, and a C1 certificate in German. Learning for me is a passion, and I firmly believe that the best teachers are those who engage with the students and the material with energy and interest. As an educator, I try to find ways that my students can engage with the material with enthusiasm too. Using an adaptive approach, I craft my lesson plans to suit the needs of the individual student and ensure that we address the material in detail, while keeping a clear picture of the larger whole.

I have over three years of experience tutoring beginner and intermediate students in the German language, helping build skills in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. I also have formal pedagogical training, and designed and taught a for-credit history and literature college course on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien. My tools as an educator range from lectures and guided readings and discussions in the classroom, to small group and one-on-one support. I have experience both introducing new material, and helping students master existing material.

As an undergraduate student, I had coursework in history in most major regions of the world, with a special focus on medieval South Asia, the United States, and Europe in the twentieth century. My Senior Honors Thesis in History was focused on modern German political history in particular. My coursework in German Studies often supplemented my historical research, with classes in language, politics, literature, and culture.
