Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary-aged students since I was in elementary school myself. I enjoy taking complex ideas and making them easy enough for a young student to understand it. I am able to tutor students in all core subjects- including reading/language arts, math, science, and history. In high school, I helped run a weekend tutoring initiative in order to help at-risk youth meet the standards that the state-mandated exam (STAAR) considered successfully mastering. There are different approaches to teaching young children. It is important to consider how each child is different and learns differently. Therefore, I believe in first finding out a student's learning style and then using that to present information in a way that works with that style. This is pivotal to a child's learning/education. You must first make a child feel comfortable with the subject matter before immersing them into it- in order to do that, you should present information in a way that appeals to their style of learning. I also like to help students realize their own potential as opposed to just talking to the student and giving them answers. It's so important to teach children the skills they need to apply to a certain subject or problem so that they can use these strategies when they face similar problems later!

Genetics

I've tutored students in this area of Biology since high school during this unit in AP Biology. Once I reached this course in my college career, my interests in the subject had grown and I found that tutoring others in it was rewarding and fun.

STAAR

I was part of the first class to take the STAAR exams required for graduation in high school- I received highest marks on the exams I did take (English I, II, and III, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra II, World Geography, World History, and US History). During my sophomore through senior years, I tutored at-risk elementary-aged youth during STAAR tutorial held on Saturdays until testing time came around.

Study Skills

In high school, I participated in several extra-curricular activities, including being on the varsity golf team, being president of my school's Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter, a member of the National Honor Society, as well as volunteering at medical camps once per month 2.5 hours away from home. I graduated number six in my class of over 400 graduates. In addition, I scored a 31 on my ACT, increasing my score by a total of 4 points from one test to the next. I was able to get into a competitive BS/MD program and have excelled in the program thus far. It is safe to say that I understand how to study and what works well when it comes to studying. In addition to fine-tuning my own study skills, I enjoy helping others do the same. I was a supplemental instruction leader at my university. Supplemental instruction is a program targeted at classes with high rates of D's, F's, and withdrawals. While I tutored for basic statistics, I saw that my students were different types of learners. Because of this, I used different learning techniques and strategies to help the different learners retain information.

TAKS

I received commended performance on each and every TAKS test that I took while in school. I've taken and exceeded passing measures for each exam and understand the amount of time and effort that it takes to achieve that goal.
