Hi, I'm Chiharu. I am originally from Kyoto, Japan, and I speak both Japanese and English. I was an EFL teacher at private high schools in Japan for several years before I came to the US to get a master's degree in TESOL. I had a unique opportunity to start my teaching career in the United States soon after I got the degree, and I have been a teacher in the US since then.

My teaching experiences are mostly in a classroom setting at colleges, language schools and high schools, but I picked up some tutoring opportunities and started to give private language lessons as I was a classroom teacher. I currently teach at a local college a few days a week and tutor several students through Wyzant, and I enjoy teaching in both venues. As for my tutoring experience, I have tutored high school students who were struggling with their TOEFL scores and overall English skills, some graduate students who needed supplemental ESL lessons to perform better in their business class, middle school, high school and college students who wanted to learn Japanese and needed guided assistance for their study, and some adult students who wanted to learn Japanese for their career advancement and who are simply interested in Japanese language and culture and want to learn them. I am confident that I can help you learn Japanese or English as a Second Language at all levels.

My lessons have been popular and well-received among my students. With my unique background of being a former ESL student and with deep linguistics knowledge combined with teaching experiences, I can predict problematic areas in language learning, understand students' struggle and frustration, and support my students as I provide more effective lessons and advice either in Japanese or English lessons.

Teaching languages is my passion, and I love helping and seeing my students improve their language skills! I am confident that I can make a difference in your life through language lessons. Please feel free to contact me to ask for more details about my lessons and schedules and let me help you learn :)

I have been an ESL/EFL teacher for more than 20 years, I was an EFL teacher in Japan for several years before I came to the US to get a master's degree. Soon after I graduated from Boston University, I got a very good job offer and started teaching ESL in the United States. I have taught ESL at colleges, high schools, ESL schools, and a test prep school, and I currently teach at a local college here in Texas a few days a week in addition to private lessons through Wyzant. I have teaching experience, knowledge, and unique perspective of being a former ESL student to support and guide students to master English effectively and efficiently. I was successful in learning English as an ESL student, and mastering English has opened up so many wonderful opportunities for me. I would love to give back to ESL communities and share my knowledge and secrets of learning English. If you are interested in taking lessons with me, please feel free to contact me to ask more details about my lessons and schedules. Let me help you learn English!

I am originally from Kyoto, Japan and a native Japanese speaker, but I have lived in the US for 15 years, and I speak both Japanese and English fluently. I have been a language teacher since I graduated from college in Japan, so I have tons of teaching experiences both as a classroom teacher at colleges, high schools, language schools, and a Japanese supplementary school, and as a private tutor. Teaching is my passion, and especially I love teaching my mother tongue to people who are eager to learn! My teaching style is to leverage my linguistic knowledge and compare/contrast both languages to help my students understand and master the language efficiently. Also, since the language and its culture are tightly connected, I usually teach Japanese culture as I teach the language. I teach Japanese at all levels, and my lessons have been popular and well-received among my students. I will happily work with your schedule, and I am sure we can start lessons soon. Please feel free to contact me and ask me more details about Japanese lessons :)

Excellent Sensei!

We weren't sure what to expect from tutoring, as it's been a long time since we've been in school... but in just two lessons, Chiharu has taken us far beyond what we were getting from Duolingo and really filled in the gaps of understanding that we had on grammar, usage, etc. Excellent teacher! :)

Incredible teacher

This is my first time ever doing any kind of tutoring. Chiharu started with trying to make me feel comfortable and asked many questions on my goals and hopes for learning Japanese. She’s very encouraging, and goes at a perfect pace; giving you information about certain cultural things or common vs uncommon uses. I’m so excited for my next lesson. If you’re like me and just want to learn Japanese because it’s an amazing language, Chiharu sensei is the one to go to!

Excellent teacher

Chiharu is an incredibly patient teacher that understands everyone learns differently and at different paces. I cannot wait to learn more from her each week.

Greatly helpful and knowledgeable and accommodating

Ms. Chiharu helped my son Justin at our request of last minute and late evening like 11 pm. She reviewed Justin’s essay and provided comments in an hour and she followed up to ensure my son got it. We were so grateful of her accommodation to our request at this circumstance. Thanks a lot. My son will definitely continue to have Ms. Chiharu as his Japanese tutor. Once again, thanks a lot!

Very skilled and motivating teacher/tutor!

I have studied several foreign languages – in-person and on-line. I am a returning Wyzant student. Japanese is a very rich and interesting language, but it also has some unique challenges. In addition to being a native, Japanese speaker, Chiharu-san speaks excellent English and best of all, understands American idioms and culture. Learning a new language can be difficult. I can speak from personal experience that a great teacher makes all the difference. Chiharu-san makes each lesson fun and interesting. Best of all, you can tell she truly cares about helping each student succeed! I take my lessons on-line. She has my highest recommendation for a foreign language instructor, teacher and motivator. A+

Knowledgable tutor with a flexible approach to learning

I began working with Chiharu after I realized that the classroom instruction in my area didn't meet my needs. It was important to me to have a tutor who was a native speaker (or who at least spent time living and working in Japan). Chiharu's unique background was appealing to me as she has many different perspectives on both teaching and learning a foreign language. What I appreciate the most is her flexibility, not only in scheduling, but in utilizing different methods to facilitate learning. Without a doubt my Japanese ability has improved in the six months since we started working together and I highly recommend her as a tutor.

Very Knowlegible about the language and the culture

Chiharu is a very patient and pleasant instructor, she will not only teach the language, but the dialect and situational usage of the phrases, so you won't be misunderstood...

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Chiharu helped me get ready for TOEFL test. We had only 4 lessons but they were enough to make me see how hard the test might be and how good she was showing me everything all TOEFL makers should know. She is super patient and always has a different way to explain something you have a hard time understanding. I did not take the test yet, but I'm 100% sure all her tips were essential to make me feel ready and much more confident. I'm moving to Brazil soon and I'll definitely keep my online lessons with her.
