Hi, I'm Chiharu, and I was a top 10% Wyzant tutor in 2019 and 2020. I am originally from Kyoto, Japan, and I speak both Japanese and English. I was an EFL teacher at private high schools in Japan for several years before I came to the US to get a master's degree in TESOL. I had an opportunity to start my teaching career in the United States soon after I got the degree, and I have been a teacher in the US since then.

My teaching experiences are mostly in a classroom setting at colleges, language schools and high schools, but I picked up some tutoring opportunities and started to give private language lessons as I was a classroom teacher. I currently teach at a local college a few days a week and tutor several students through Wyzant, and I enjoy teaching in both venues. As for my tutoring experience, I have tutored high school students who were struggling with their TOEFL scores and overall English skills, some graduate students who needed supplemental ESL lessons to perform better in their business class, middle school, high school and college students who wanted to learn Japanese and needed guided assistance for their study, and some adult students who wanted to learn Japanese for their career advancement and who are simply interested in Japanese language and culture and want to learn them. I am confident that I can help you learn Japanese or English as a Second Language at all levels.

My lessons have been popular and well-received among my students. With my unique background of being a former ESL student and with deep linguistics knowledge combined with teaching experiences, I can predict problematic areas in language learning, understand students' struggle and frustration, and support my students as I provide more effective lessons and advice either in Japanese or English lessons.

Teaching languages is my passion, and I love helping and seeing my students improve their language skills! I am confident that I can make a difference in your life through language lessons. Please feel free to contact

I have been an ESL/EFL teacher for more than 20 years, I was an EFL teacher in Japan for several years before I came to the US to get a master's degree. Soon after I graduated from Boston University, I got a very good job offer and started teaching ESL in the United States. I have taught ESL at colleges, high schools, ESL schools, and a test prep school, and I currently teach at a local college here in Texas a few days a week in addition to private lessons through Wyzant. I have teaching experience, knowledge, and unique perspective of being a former ESL student to support and guide students to master English effectively and efficiently. I was successful in learning English as an ESL student, and mastering English has opened up so many wonderful opportunities for me. I would love to give back to ESL communities and share my knowledge and secrets of learning English. If you are interested in taking lessons with me, please feel free to contact me to ask more details about my lessons and schedules. Let me help you learn English!

I am originally from Kyoto, Japan and a native Japanese speaker, but I have lived in the US for 15 years, and I speak both Japanese and English fluently. I have been a language teacher since I graduated from college in Japan, so I have tons of teaching experiences both as a classroom teacher at colleges, high schools, language schools, and a Japanese supplementary school, and as a private tutor. Teaching is my passion, and especially I love teaching my mother tongue to people who are eager to learn! My teaching style is to leverage my linguistic knowledge and compare/contrast both languages to help my students understand and master the language efficiently. Also, since the language and its culture are tightly connected, I usually teach Japanese culture as I teach the language. I teach Japanese at all levels, and my lessons have been popular and well-received among my students. I will happily work with your schedule, and I am sure we can start lessons soon. Please feel free to contact me and ask me more details about Japanese lessons :)

She never quits!

The level of energy and passion for Japanese language learning is consistent. She brings a high level of intensity to the lesson which require hours of self study to reciprocate. Don't expect hand holding. You need to do the work. She has dropped homework assignments which require hours to compete. Only for the serious learner.

Great Teacher, Patient and Knowledgeable

Chiharu is an excellent tutor. She is patient, knowledgeable and great at teaching. She helps you improve in all areas very effectively. Speaking, writing and comprehending especially. Every lesson had a component of speaking, which I think is extremely helpful and might be something you miss in a regular classroom. In my studies with her, I not only studied the language, but she also taught me a lot about the culture, and helped me understand the language in a way a textbook alone wouldn’t be able to. She was also very accommodating to my schedule, which is a huge plus. I have learned so much from here and am very happy to have been her student. I cannot reccommend her enough.

Great tutor, very easy to talk with

So far we have done a lot of great work on speaking proficiency. She also has a really good understanding of the Tobira textbook, which makes deciding lesson content very easy, and the lessons very efficient. Would definitely recommend her as a tutor.

Dynamic and Fun

The reviews of Chiharu outlined a tutor who was fully devoted to the craft of teaching the Japanese language. They were accurate with their description of this amazing tutor. None of the reviews are inflated. Chiharu makes the pain of the language tolerable while delivering accurate information - grammar and vocabulary. I would highly recommend her for learners at any level.

Fun, easygoing and skilled tutor!

As a beginner learning Japanese, Chiharu was incredibly kind, patient and thorough in her teachings. Although we used the Genki textbook during our lessons, she always went on to explain more about the subject and why the way things were. She made sure that I understood what was being taught and what would be expected in the future if you ever go to Japan or speak Japanese in real world scenarios. She made the sessions incredibly fun because she has an easygoing personality, which makes learning Japanese with her enjoyable. We worked on grammar, vocabulary and practiced having conversations which enabled me to say that with a bit more hard work I can be confident in my Japanese communication skills thanks to Chiharu! I was always looking forward to the sessions because learning with Chiharu was the best. No questions were ever left unanswered, I highly recommend her as a tutor for anyone trying to start learning or wanting to brush up on their Japanese.

Engaged, dedicated, and passionate teacher

Chiharu-sensei has been of tremendous help to me since our first lesson. Having spent some time in Japan, I had learned some of the basics of Japanese but had also picked up a number of bad habits. Chiharu-sensei has been thoughtful, patient, and thorough in helping me correct these issues. She's help me engage in the study of Nihongo in a really meaningful way, and she brings much experience, humor, and diligence to our lessons. Always finding ways to engage me on my level, she's helped put difficult grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and speech styles in context so that I may utilize them more naturally going forward. Classes are always fun, challenging, geared to my needs as well as sensitive to my schedule. It has been my tremendous pleasure to study under Chiharu-sensei. I look forward to continuing my lessons with her in the years ahead.

Friendly, Knowledgeable, and Flexible Teacher

Chiharu Sensei is an excellent instructor, who manages to juggle the complex task of introducing several writing systems, vocabulary, grammar, and mixing it together into natural sentences, all for a language that is notoriously difficult for a foreigner to learn. I was speaking full, albeit simple sentences, in my first lesson, and creating my own by the next week! On top of being highly-capable at transmitting information, she manages to make lessons enjoyable as well. I've yet to have a single lesson that feels overly serious, and she treats me as a student, rather than a paycheck. Finally, she is quite flexible as a teacher, allowing me to go at my own pace, giving suggestions on what I should do to achieve my goals with the language, and giving recommendations beyond the bare minimum her job requires. For anyone unsure about going to her for tutoring, let me put aside any doubts, she will not disappoint.
