Hi there,

I love teaching! My subject specialties are Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, English, and ESL. There's nothing like the rush of putting foreign language skills to the test in real-time conversation. I used Spanish every day during my semester abroad in Argentina, which is where I learned the importance of active practice when learning a foreign language.

After Argentina, I went to China to improve my Mandarin Chinese in the same way I did with Spanish, and I enrolled in full time Chinese classes at Tsinghua University in Beijing for a year and a half. While there, I not only learned Chinese but also effective teaching methods. I discovered which methods led to the most success in retention, and I now apply those techniques to my tutoring. Repetition and active practice are a big piece of the equation!

Within the past 3 years, I became TEFL certified and taught ESL to children in rural Taiwan. It was there that I really developed my teaching style and learned to adjust my teaching method based on the' individual needs of my students. My teaching method centers around guiding students to come up with the correct answer instead of simply giving it to them. My Chinese also got a boost in Taiwan, as I had to rely on it every day outside the classroom and translate for my non-Chinese speaking co-workers.

Now in Austin, I'm working on my graduate degree in traditional Chinese medicine. I look forward to each tutoring session and love to see my students' continuous improvement. While being able to communicate is often the ultimate goal of language learning, I have also helped many students prepare for exams and get ahead in class as they work toward fluency. Along with cooking, preparing tea, and hiking, teaching is one of my many passions. Whenever you're ready to start pursuing your educational goals, I'll be here to help you cross that bridge.

Approved Subjects

Chinese

Chinese

I started studying Mandarin Chinese at Simpson College in 2008. For the past 3.5 years, I've been living in both China and Taiwan. I spent a year and a half in China studying Chinese at Zhejiang University and Tsinghua University, where I was placed in the advanced Chinese language level. The past two years have been spent living the rural city of Yilan, Taiwan teaching English and using my Chinese daily. I am comfortable with all aspects of the language - reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. Since I have learned both simplified and traditional Chinese characters, I can teach either style. I have a deep understanding of Chinese and Asian culture and can help students prepare to travel to China or Taiwan.
English

English

I am TEFL certified and taught English as a second language full-time for two years. I got perfect grades in my AP English classes and have been tutoring students in English for nearly one year and have helped students prepare for the English section on standardized testing. It is also my native language.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I obtained TEFL certification in 2015 and spent two years teaching English as a second language in Taiwan to students, aged 3-15. I was employed by Hess International Education Group.
Phonics

Phonics

I have taught phonics lessons to groups of students in a classroom setting for almost two years. I have taught ABC's to preschoolers and more complex phonics to elementary school students. I focus on student speaking time, repetition, recognition, and practice, sometimes including games in the lesson.
Reading

Reading

I taught English to elementary-aged students in Taiwan for two years, which included reading. Students performed successfully on my tests in reading comprehension and retention, vocabulary, and related grammatical structures. I worked with students to understand the surface meaning of the text and to also think critically about it.
Spanish

Spanish

I started my Spanish studies 11 years ago and have studied abroad in both Argentina and Costa Rica. During my semester in Argentina I was the top student in my Spanish language classes. I also translated the website of the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence into Spanish.

Knowledgeable and patient teacher

Kaden is a good Spanish teacher for my 8 yr old. He is counting and learning basic Spanish sentence, grammar, and favorite animals in less than a month. My son is hyperactive but Kaden is able to get him to learn even while he is jumping around. My son also calls him his best friend.

ESL English Teacher for Brazilians

When we found Kaden 5 months ago I was not sure if tutoring would help my wife to improve her proficiency in English. Although she can read and understand the language well she never spoke it before. After 40 lessons, my wife now feels comfortable to communicate in English, when necessary. Kaden planned her development based on what we wanted to accomplish. He was very careful and always provided lesson reviews. But it's not just that... During all these classes, Kaden became a friend for our family. His charisma, calm and kindness captivated not only us but our kids and even the cat! It was a blessing to find him and it definitely changed our lives. Not being able to communicate where you live is like living in a box and this was a big problem for our family back then. Thanks to Kaden the box is now open. He helped us with something really important and we will be forever grateful.

Great tutor

Kaden is very patient and thorough. He found the right textbook for the students based on their current English level. He taught the students pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and everything in between. The fact that he speaks Mandarin helps the tutoring. Kaden is a great tutor!
