Hi, I’m Lorena! I’m a scientist and educator with a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, a master's degree in Advanced Genetics, and a bachelor's degree in Clinical Biochemistry. I work at a university as a researcher, though one of my favorite aspects of being a scientist is teaching. I enjoy working with learners of all ages, including helping my own children with their homework and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory. I also enjoy community outreach activities, as they let me share my passion for science and help make it more accessible.
I have mentored over 25 undergraduate and graduate students since 2017 and have served as a lab instructor. My areas of specialty are biology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, and developmental biology; I also provide assistance with scientific writing, research presentations, data interpretation, R, and bioinformatics. Since I am a native Spanish speaker from Mexico, I also enjoy helping students to learn and practice Spanish.
I adopt a patient and encouraging method and adjust it to suit the particular needs of each student. If the material is difficult I break it down into small, manageable steps, use examples and visuals, and am always ready to answer any questions as we proceed. Whether or not we are studying basic concepts or carrying out advanced research, I hope that you not only understand the answer but also know why it makes sense.
