With three degrees in Math, including a PhD, I have a vast content knowledge of math that should cover pretty much any math course a student might take. In college I majored in Math (51 semester hours) with a Minor in physics (21 semester hours), graduating summa cum laude.
Of course, there's a lot more to teaching and tutoring that just being an expert in the content. My teaching career has spanned more than 25 years, and includes middle school, high school, college, and graduate level courses in Math and Math Education. In that time I also worked as a professional developer for secondary math teachers, leading teachers to strengthen their working knowledge of math content and teaching.
As a tutor and teacher I work to make Math as concrete as possible. My focus as a college professor was Math Education, particularly the mathematical preparation of future elementary and secondary school teachers. This required me to design courses heavy in the effective use of concrete models in math teaching. This has influenced my teaching at all levels, especially with students who are lost when material is introduced with too much abstraction. With online instruction during Covid lockdown I found I could use virtual manipulatives, along with concrete materials and a webcam, to achieve a similar impact. I meet students wherever they are on the concrete-to-abstract continuum.
In the classroom I have never been a teacher who stays put. I can best evaluate students' understanding by moving around and working with students, leveraging the power of individual tutoring in the classroom setting.
Students for years have given feedback that validates how I approach working with them. Here's a sampling from notes I received from students in my recent secondary classes:
"Learning Algebra was super easy because of you!!"
"Thank you for motivating and believing in me. I will cherish that."
"You're one of the best teachers I've ever had!"
"Thank you for teaching me math for the real world."
