Hi! My name is Elizabeth, and I graduated from Hamilton College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Creative Writing, earning departmental honors in biochemistry/molecular biology. My coursework spanned oceanography, marine ecology, and general biology, and I spent my senior year conducting independent thesis research on polychaete worm ecology in the Hawaiian Archipelago. I have also taken courses in poetry, fiction, stagewriting, and editing since high school, and I graduated from NESA's creative writing program as editor-in-chief.
My teaching experience started in 2023 as a Camp Counselor with Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, where I taught scientific concepts like water filtration and marine taxonomy to elementary and middle-school-aged girls in a hands-on, activity-based setting over two summers. I've also spent the past three years as a Community Advisor at Hamilton College, mentoring undergraduate students and helping them navigate both academic and personal challenges.
My approach to tutoring is centered on explaining the bigger picture. Anyone can learn that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but knowing how that organelle creates energy (and where that energy goes) allows for a more complete understanding of the system. Learning should not be about memorizing facts, but understanding the building blocks used to get the "correct answer." I bring the same philosophy to writing: rather than teaching rules in isolation, I help students understand why a sentence works, so they can apply that reasoning to their own voice rather than just following a formula.
