Hello, call me Phillip! I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in Literacy Education from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Currently, I am continuing my studies in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. My academic background reflects my lifelong dedication to reading, writing, and helping others develop their own confidence and skill in using the English language.
I have taught English in a variety of contexts since 2007. My experience includes four years as a high school English teacher, one year as a special education paraprofessional, and several years as a volunteer instructor in afterschool enrichment programs, including a few months in the mountains of Peru. I’ve also served as a teacher educator, helping prepare future English teachers, and for the past two years, I’ve worked as a writing tutor and consultant at Our Lady of the Lake University. In that role, I support undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, guiding them through everything from foundational composition to advanced academic writing and personal statements.
I’ve worked with students of all ages, though most of my experience centers on high school and college-level learners. My tutoring approach is patient, collaborative, and tailored to each student's needs. I believe that strong writing comes from both clear structure and authentic voice, and I help students grow in both areas by offering thoughtful feedback, asking guiding questions, and building trust. Whether you're working on an essay, preparing for college applications, or just trying to find your footing in writing, I’d be honored to support your goals.
