Bio

I help high school, college, graduate students, and adults with papers, theses, dissertations, and other writing projects.
I can help you develop a research topic; organize, structure, and develop a piece of writing; recognize when you need to do more research in order to have enough material to work with; correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar; and ensure conformity with a style manual.

I earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Chicago Divinity School, where I wrote my doctoral dissertation. I have two years’ experience helping graduate students in the social sciences, nursing, and the humanities with their writing. They have been both traditional students and adults who have returned to school mid-career.
I raised a M.S. in Nursing student’s grade from failing to 99.5%, her professor, who had previously humiliated her in front of the class, singling her out, saying hers was one of the best papers he had ever seen.
Less is more. Fewer syllables, fewer words make it easier for the brain to process text and create meaning.
I work one-on-one with students, reviewing their work online and then responding to it and making suggestions, although I’m open to structuring the relationship differently.
I will mentor you and teach you. I will not write your papers for you.
When I’m not tutoring, I’m writing a book on religious experience and neurology.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have to see if I could help you with your writing or to schedule a session. I’ll get back to you promptly.

Proofreading

Proofreading

I’m detail-oriented and a proofreader by nature. I can proofread academic or business text for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. I was fortunate to have outstanding English teachers early on. While my dissertation at the University of Chicago conforms with The Chicago Manual of Style, I can also proofread other styles.
Reading

Reading

Critical reading is a central skill in the liberal arts. Learning to identify an author’s argument reveals the author’s real message instead of getting lost in the words. I identified the argument in a nineteenth-century American religion, setting it in the context of its clash with evolution, instead of its claimed source in revelation.
Writing

Writing

Writing is my life. I love to write and am currently writing a book. I think the piano lessons gave me an ear for language. My doctoral work gave me substantial experience writing papers and ultimately a dissertation, now in the University of Chicago Library.
