I am a retired research engineer. I worked in an engineering research, test, development center for the U.S. Army. My duties were to learn, develop and then teach testing and measurement technologies to myself and others. While working I attended Community College and later University where my majors of STEM, meshed neatly with my duties. I was challenged at work and school. I was taught to think critically as all students should be allowed to do. I was well paid to learn and grow in my field. A student should enjoy the journey of educating oneself and see beauty and fulfilment in reaching their academic goals. These goals, often become their legacy. Anyone can teach how to remember by rote facts, or how to pass “canned” tests, but a teacher who can teach why and how, will set the student on firm footing with confidence.
I can help those who are seeking GEDs or support the student that needs temporary guidance in college or high school course work. I see my role as a path finder and guide. I can work with lesson plans and different GED learning books to accommodate any student. I am committed to my students and set my schedule around them and will always be accessible. In my role as a tutor, a paid tutor, I see my students as customers of my services, this idea is often missing in college. But this is how I saw myself in my own academic pursuits. I made it incumbent on myself and my schools to understand that I was a purchaser of their services. The responsibility to myself was to be in my seat and learn as much as I could. The school was to provide facility and information from instructors and professors to assist me to matriculate towards graduation in my degree, major or study. In this I see no difference from the Tutor student relationship here. We must both assume our individual roles and responsibilities to make the learning happen to good ends. We must strike a bargain to collaborate with each other to strive and reach the result the student came for. I am here to serve my students.
