I'm Nikki! I have a Bachelor's degree in geophysics from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Master's in Subsurface Geoscience from Rice University. I have 5 years of cumulative tutoring experience across variety of settings, including in-school tutoring and more freelance platforms (like Wyzant). First, I tutored Kindergarten through twelfth-grade math with groups of 5-10 students. During group tutoring, each student was able to move at their own pace and I went over new topics with students individually. During graduate school, I held one-on-one math and science tutoring sessions with middle school, high school, and college-age students. The main topics I covered were Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry, Pre-Calculus and Algebra II. In both group sessions and one-on-one sessions, I helped students fill in knowledge gaps and tried to explain concepts to them in a creative way.
I've long held a passion for STEM subjects and I often assisted my peers in improving their understanding of math and science. My high school physics teacher used engaging demonstrations and comprehensible language to help students learn material: I try and take the same approach to tutoring. I make this approach more portable by using interesting real-world examples of each concept. After going over the overarching concept and potential real-world applications, I typically go through several examples, then allow the student try on their own. Throughout this process, I encourage the student to ask clarifying questions. Many of my students were not the biggest fans of math or science, but I changed their perception by revealing the bigger picture and introducing fun tips and tricks.
My goal as a tutor is to give students the necessary tools to succeed on their own: everyone learns a bit differently and I try to keep that in mind when planning lessons for my students. All I ask for is a willingness to learn, and I can help with the rest. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!
