Hello! I'm Julia, and I am currently a professional game developer. I've previously taught all ages from pre-K to adult. I worked as a creative writing instructor at summer camp for primarily teenagers and preteens for a year, then taught reading and math to K-2 in a traditional classroom, then acted as an educator for pre-K students in children's museums. I have a BA in History, and an MA in game development.

My favorite part of teaching is getting to know the student and seeing the way their eyes light up when something 'clicks'. No matter the age I've taught, that flash of understanding is consistent and beautiful. The way I get that 'click' moment varies based on context: for kids looking for support in an existing class, I like to have the syllabus ahead of time so I can see where the class is and I can discuss with the student what they're struggling with. Often, what kids need is enough structure to review the basics, then someone who can scaffold their learning by asking them the right questions and providing exercises that help them build off existing understanding.
When I'm teaching a person a topic that personally interests them beyond a classroom--for example, Unreal Engine or creative writing--I like to have a conversation before starting the tutoring to learn what the student hopes to gain. Would they like someone to review existing work, or teach the basics? Are they hoping to become a professional, or just work on a passion project as a hobby? Once I understand the student's goals, then I can make plans for how to help the student reach them.
I lead with care, humor, and curiosity, and I strive to instill the same in all of my students. Let's have fun with learning together. :)
