About Jordan

Bio

I love helping students succeed! To be successful, I emphasize communication skills: writing, public speaking and a knowledge of the liberal arts, such as history and geography. These skills are just as important as math and science. I also emphasize having fun while learning; if it's dreary, students do not learn. I set the bar high, but I also do everything within my power to help students exceed their highest expectations.

I love helping students succeed! To be successful, I emphasize communication skills: writing, public speaking and a knowledge of the liberal arts, such as history and geography. These skills are just as important as math and science. I also emphasize having fun while learning; if it's dreary, students do not learn. I set the bar high, but I also do everything within my power to help students exceed their highest expectations.

My BA is in history (cum laude) from the University of Michigan. I have also earned an MA in Hebrew Letters, along with Rabbinic Ordination, from the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. Recently, I also received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from my Seminary as well. My thesis examined the interaction of Greco-Roman and Jewish thought in the First Century, CE in Palestine, Egypt, and Rome. I also bring over 20 years of pulpit experience to my tutoring. This means that I have spent hours helping kids compose and deliver speeches, as well as learn Bible, Hebrew, and related subjects. This has given me an appreciation for the developmental needs of children, including those with special needs. And as a parent, I have lived the life-span of a student!

I look forward to working with students of all ages and helping them to succeed. Their success is my only concern.

I am an ordained rabbi in the Reform Jewish movement, having studied the Bible extensively in college and seminary. I have continued my studies - and have written and lectured on the Bible (primarily Old Testament) for over 25 years. I have also done some studies of the New Testament, albeit from a Jewish perspective.

My undergraduate specialization was Classical History. In Seminary, I wrote a 250 page thesis on 1st Century CE classical Jewish thought, as it pertained to the development of Jewish history, philosophy and law. I have continued to follow this field ever since I left the university, especially through studies of archaeological finds. In order to teach classics, I am able to access Greco-Roman authors, discuss ancient philosophy, explore ancient history and teach about ancient religions: pagan, Jewish and early Christian. The primary question of classical history is: how did the Greco-Roman world lay the foundation for our modern society? Through the study of the classics, I can help the student answer that question.

As an ordained rabbi, I have lived and breathed Judaism for my entire adult life. In addition, I have also studied Christianity and Islam, especially as their origins relate to Judaism - and how these three Abrahamic faiths relate to each other in the modern world.
