Hello! I'm Marcus. I attended the University of Texas at Dallas, where I graduated on the Dean's List with a Bachelor's degree in Literature. Throughout my undergraduate career, I focused on strengthening my academic, critical, and creative writing skills not only as a student, but as a teacher's assistant, club officer, and English tutor at the university library. My essays and creative works have been awarded and nominated for the Pushcart Prize, the Bill Swart Essay Prize, and the Robert Bone Memorial Creative Writing Prize. Additionally, I am a member of the International English Honor Society (Sigma Tau Delta), where my writing has been awarded the Judson Q. Owen Award and the Isabel Sparks President’s Award. I also have multiple creative and academic publications under my belt, including a scientific research paper.

During my two years as a teacher's assistant and English tutor, I met directly with students who were struggling with a variety of essay types, including rhetorical, persuasive, analytical, and narrative. Due to the volume of these sessions, I developed an eye for efficiently understanding an essay's strengths and weaknesses; I also enjoyed resolving concerns involving grammar, vocabulary, and critical analysis. As a writing club officer, I directed meetings where I critiqued, edited, and proofread over 200 essays, short stories, poems, and scripts. These experiences, combined with my literature coursework, have given me a thorough understanding of the expository and creative writing process. Come to me for any writing-related guidance, whether you have just begun brainstorming ideas, are crafting your body paragraphs, or are on your final draft! I would also love to incorporate any resources you or your parents may provide. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a meeting, don't hesitate to reach out!

Essay Writing

I served as a teacher's assistant, English tutor, and writing club officer during my undergraduate career. I spent this time critiquing over 200 essays spanning multiple disciplines, including narrative, persuasive, rhetorical, and critical. Additionally, my essay "What is a Convenience Woman?" was nominated for the Bill Swart Essay Prize, and I have collaborated with a graduate student to write a scientific paper entitled "Choline degradation in Paracoccus denitrificans: identification of sources of formaldehyde."
