Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I received my Master's degree in: Anthropology/Archaeology of Ancient Maya from Prescott College in Arizona.

I received my Bachelor's degree at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in Anthropology, where it is required to study the four-field approach to anthropology. This means you must be proficient in all four fields before graduation.

Archaeology

Archaeology is studying anything made by human hands. It is most often used to understand ancient and lost civilizations where there are not people to show us and tell us about the way they live. When finding artifacts, (individual items left behind), excavating the area is the job of archaeologists. By uncovering the things past peoples used it only adds to our knowledge of these long dead societies. It also tells us how long ago these people lived. We can find out and understand the people by studying the things that they left behind. We can find out if they were nomadic, sedentary, if they were hunters/gatherers or farmers. We can more fully understand their political structure, their religious beliefs, and their hierarchical structure. It is very important that archaeology is performed in a scientific manner to save the information we find for future generations. Under the field of archaeology there are numerous sub-categories to accommodate the many individual areas within the subject. Just to give you an idea of the scope of the field here are just a few specialized areas within archaeology:
• Pottery analysis
Architecture
• Egyptology
• Ancient Maya Studies
• Studies for each and every different region of the world
Cooking vessels
• And the list goes on and on

While at UNLV I took extensive courses in Archaeology, I was involved in three field schools. One in the Mohave desert in California excavating for evidences of early man. I also went to Belize central America for excavation at an Ancient Maya Site, Cahal Pech, uncovering a new section of the already uncovered site. In the pit I was working an ancient royal burial was discovered. I also did lab work in research for discovering what the Inuit Indians in Alaska coated their pottery with to be able to cook. I worked extensively in documenting artifacts found, cleaning and numbering artifacts and record keeping of said artifacts. I have extensive research during the process of my Master's degree. Spending 18 months in Belize central America researching Mayan caves in Belize. Comparing different uses of caves, and the advancement of technologies in cave research throughout the past 150 years.
