Hello, I am Melanie M. I have an AA from over 20 years ago, and am now back in school finishing my Bachelors in El. Ed. In between these two college experiences I’ve had lots of hands-on experience and training as a homeschooler and tutor in a Classical Conversations Community and as teacher at a private school. I am certified as an ACCS (Association of Classical Christian Schools) teacher per the private school I’ve been teaching at, and have attended many conferences and trainings for Classical Conversations over the years as well.

I homeschooled my own 6 children for about 10 years overall. I was an Essentials tutor for 4-6th graders for 2 years of this time. This involved modeling for the parents and teaching the students grammar concepts, sentence classification, and sentence diagramming. I also led the writing component where students learned how to take information from 1 or more sources, fuse the information together coherently in their own words with the use of stylistic techniques and appropriate structure. I was also the Challenge B director (7th-8th level) where I lead a weekly, all-day seminar that covered Latin, Logic, Astronomy, Algebra, and Literature. Since then I’ve worked as an introductory Latin teacher for two sections of 4th grade and incoming 7th-8th graders at a private classical school. My subjects for Wyzant include Literature, Composition, History, and Grammar.

My style of teaching relies heavily on Socratic method style questions. By asking open-ended questions without a simple yes or no answer students are required to think about the concept a bit more deeply and can boost their problem solving skills . The subjects I have chosen for this tutoring platform are all subjects that I enjoy. My goal would be as Socrates, to help them “discover” knowledge for themselves by asking them good questions.

I am pretty flexible and am happy to customize my skills and services to what your student needs. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!

American History

American History

We covered history thoroughly throughout my children’s homeschooling years including memorization of a timeline of major events on World History. As an adult, I’m taking an in depth college course called “World Civilizations II” as an elective. I enjoy history and watching documentaries so much I’ve considered minoring it it.
Grammar

Grammar

I taught the Essentials program with Classical Conversations for 2 years. It involved in depth understanding of the 8 parts of speech, sentence classification, as well as diagramming.
Literature

Literature

I’ve always been an avid reader. I particularly enjoy the classics and educating my children at home through a classical program involved reading many books of this caliber. I also gained experience analyzing literature by teaching my sons Challenge B seminar with Classical Conversations. We used the “The Lost Tools of Writing” from the Circe Institute..
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a reader and throughout my own education I have always been strong in vocabulary. I taught 4th-6th graders how to add more elaborate and interesting words to their writing. We used IEW as our curriculum which had a very effective vocabulary component.
World History

World History

We covered history extensively as homeschoolers. We memorized a timeline of major historical events. As an adult I’ve since taken more history courses in college, including Eastern History (Asia, India, etc.) Currently I am taking a class called “World Civilizations II” as an elective. I enjoy history so much I have considered minoring in it. I frequently watch documentaries, listen to podcasts, and read books about history for pleasure.
Writing

Writing

I was responsible for teaching 4-6th graders and their parents writing techniques through “Institute for Excellence in Writing”. I led 2 training sessions for parents and have implemented the techniques with my own children successfully. I have also used “The Lost Tools of Writing “ from the Circe Institute for more sophisticated persuasive writing as my sons Challenge B director (also in Classical Conversations”
